007 First Light officially sells 2.7 million copies, “probably” at three million

007 First Light sales have reached 2.7 million copies, according to IO Interactive, less than two weeks after the game’s release. CEO Hakan Abrak said the total had probably already passed three million, while noting that the game had not yet fully recouped its investment. The studio also says the game’s development cost is below the previously reported figure of $200 million.

007 First Light sales and the reported three-million milestone

IO Interactive formally announced sales of 2.7 million copies at an event in Los Angeles. Speaking afterward, Abrak described the result as “a good mile above” the studio’s estimate and said the game had probably passed three million units by then. The 2.7 million figure was the announced total; the higher number was his estimate rather than a separately confirmed sales figure.

The distinction matters when comparing sales updates: an officially announced total and an executive’s estimate are not the same kind of figure. The reported numbers refer to copies sold, not necessarily the number of individual players.

Why the game has not recouped its costs yet

Abrak pushed back on reports that making the game cost $200 million. He said that figure included marketing, potential future performance-related bonuses and other costs, and that the investment in development was lower. He did not disclose a precise development budget.

Although sales have exceeded the studio’s expectations, IO Interactive has not yet fully recouped its investment. Abrak pointed to the partnership and royalties as factors in the process. As a result, a strong copy-sales total does not by itself confirm that a game has reached its break-even point; the amount returned to the developer can depend on commercial arrangements as well as sales.

First-year content and support plans

IO Interactive has announced a range of content planned for the game’s first year, with most of it set to be released for free. Abrak said continued support beyond that period was very possible, and expressed hope that players would remain engaged for a second year. However, the studio’s public discussion currently focuses on the first year rather than a confirmed second-year schedule.

For players, the practical takeaway is to distinguish announced content from future possibilities. The first-year slate has been announced, while additional support remains under discussion and has not been presented as a finalized plan.

IO Interactive and Amazon discuss future plans

Abrak said IO Interactive and Amazon are having ongoing conversations about working together in the future. For now, those discussions concern 007 First Light and its ongoing support after release. He said the companies would discuss their broader future plans at a later time.

Overall, 007 First Light sales have made a strong early start, but the game has not yet recouped its investment. The confirmed 2.7 million copies, the CEO’s estimate that sales had probably passed three million, and the still-developing plans for future content are separate updates that should be read in that context.
