GreedFall 2: The Dying World revisits the world of Spiders’ action RPG from a new point of view. Set three years before the first game, it follows a member of Teer Fradee’s Indigenous tribes who is forced to leave their homeland for Gacane. A preview build offered a look at the game’s unsettled setting, tactical combat and encounters that can be approached in more than one way.

GreedFall 2: The Dying World returns to Teer Fradee
The original GreedFall introduced Malichor, a deadly illness whose origins become central to the story. The sequel explores the plague’s earlier days, when people on the continent are beginning to fall sick and residents fear the disease may spread to their island. Conversations also reveal mistrust between the Indigenous population and settlers, giving the setting tension beyond the threat of illness.
Although the events take place before those of the first game, Spiders has described the project as more than a conventional prequel. New characters and factions shape the story, while the earlier setting provides additional context for the world players already know. The protagonist’s forced relocation also creates a distinct starting point from the first game, where the player character arrives on the island as an outsider.

A more tactical, squad-focused combat system
Combat shifts away from the first game’s more action-oriented feel and puts greater emphasis on party tactics. Battles can unfold in real time or in a slowed-down tactical mode, allowing players to direct individual squad members and choose their actions. The approach recalls tactical role-playing games, with influences that include Dragon Age: Origins; the preview also drew comparisons to Baldur’s Gate 3.
Before setting out, players create a character by selecting a Path, Weapons Mastery, Bound Skills, a Starting Talent and attribute distribution. Appearance customization was unavailable in the preview build, so that part of character creation could not be assessed. For combat, the practical takeaway is to make use of each companion’s role: keeping an archer at range while melee fighters engage enemies can help the party manage a group encounter.

Exploration, tracking and choices
An initiation ritual introduces the combat system through a fight against two beasts. Afterward, a tribe member asks the protagonist to investigate the disappearance of local animals. The task leads to encounters with hostile people, attacking dogs and evidence that steel traps are harming both wildlife and travelers.
Tracking Mode highlights points of interest, including footprints, crates and plants that can be collected. This makes it useful to activate the mode while following a trail, since it can reveal more than the route itself. Encounters also offer different ways to respond. In one situation, a group of people is caught in traps; attempts to free them involve a check, and failure can make the injury worse. The outcome matters, so it is worth considering the risk before proceeding.

A nearby camp is responsible for setting traps to support its lucrative hide trade. The protagonist can approach openly, try to sneak in or attempt to negotiate. In the preview, a direct conversation did not persuade the camp leader to stop, while a bribe was unaffordable. A threat that the tribe would send warriors eventually convinced the group to leave.
These options show how dialogue and character checks can affect the way a problem is resolved. Sneaking may not work, and a failed check can close off a preferred approach, so players may want to consider their available resources and party strengths before committing to a plan.

What the preview suggests about GreedFall 2
The preview offered an early look at a world shaped by disease, displacement and competing interests. Its tactical combat gives players more control over squad actions, while tracking and branching encounters encourage careful exploration. The combat system may take time to learn, particularly when deciding how best to use each character, but the different approaches to the camp encounter suggest that preparation and dialogue can be as important as fighting.
At the time of the preview, GreedFall 2: The Dying World was planned to enter Early Access on PC that summer, with console versions considered for the full 1.0 release after the end of 2024. Those plans were described as prospective, and release timing may have changed. Overall, GreedFall 2: The Dying World builds on the first game’s setting while introducing a new protagonist, a more tactical party system and a story that examines Teer Fradee before the events of the original.
