Hands-On With The New Spiritborn Class

The Diablo IV Spiritborn class brings a new combat style and a deep connection to the Spirit Realm to Vessel of Hatred. Hailing from the jungle region of Nahantu, Spiritborn warriors combine martial arts-inspired attacks with the powers of four animal guardians. Their abilities can support distinct builds or be mixed to create a flexible approach to combat.

What Is the Diablo IV Spiritborn Class?

Unlike classes built around familiar fantasy roles such as the Rogue or Mage, the Spiritborn is rooted in Nahantu’s culture and wilderness. Spiritborn must survive a painful trial in the jungle before they can commune with the Spirit Realm and take on the responsibility of wielding its power.

The Spirit Realm is described by associate narrative designer Eleni Rivera-Colon as a supernatural reflection of Sanctuary connected to humanity. In the game’s cosmology, it occupies a role associated with humans, in contrast to the High Heavens of angels and the Burning Hells of demons.

The Four Spirit Guardians and Their Roles

Each guardian represents a different value and offers a distinct combat focus. Choosing a guardian can help players shape a build around a preferred role, while combining abilities opens up more varied options.

  • Jaguar: Focuses on aggressive, fire-based attacks and increasing attack speed. Its theme reflects hunting and providing.
  • Eagle: Uses lightning and mobility, helping players reposition quickly while striking enemies with precision.
  • Gorilla: Emphasizes strength and protection. Its abilities help absorb or reduce damage before answering with powerful physical attacks.
  • Centipede: Relies on poison, debuffs, and crowd disruption. Its themes include decay and the new life that follows.

Game director Brent Gibson has explained that Nahantu’s people look to these guardians to embody qualities they need. This belief also shapes the Spiritborn’s spiritual connection to the animals.

Customizing Builds With the Spirit Hall

The Spirit Hall lets players choose guardians in two slots and gain bonuses connected to their selections. One slot grants a guardian-themed mechanic; for example, the eagle can create Storm Feathers when the player evades. The other slot provides a themed benefit after an enemy is killed, such as the jaguar granting +1 Ferocity, a mechanic associated with attack speed.

Players can choose the same guardian for both slots or combine different animals. Incarnate Skills add another option by granting a passive trait based on one of the four guardians. When experimenting, consider how a selection complements your main damage type, mobility, or survivability.

Martial Arts-Inspired Combat

The Spiritborn’s fighting style draws on several martial arts disciplines, including muay thai, taekwondo, karate, kung fu, and jiu-jitsu. Art director Nick Chilano has described how the animation team matched movement and attacks to each guardian’s character. Gorilla-inspired attacks favor forceful strikes, while the centipede’s movements connect closely to the ground. Jaguar combat is fast and aggressive, and eagle abilities emphasize precision and repositioning.

This agile approach allows the class to move around a fight and attack nearby groups. Guardian ultimate abilities bring the spirits into battle as giant ethereal forms, including an eagle that dives onto the battlefield and a centipede that emerges from underground to launch poison attacks.

Weapons, Armor, and Build Variety

Spiritborn weapons include polearms, glaives, and quarterstaffs, which suit the class’s acrobatic combat. Armor sets reflect guardian themes, with a design that prioritizes movement and function over extensive coverage. New Legendaries, Aspects, and Uniques are also planned for the class.

Different guardian combinations can produce notably different playstyles. A jaguar-focused setup can concentrate on rapid fire attacks, while pairing gorilla and centipede abilities can combine durability, self-healing, and poison. Respeccing the skill tree gives players a way to test these combinations and adjust a build as they learn which abilities work well together.

When Can You Play the Spiritborn?

Players who own Vessel of Hatred can select the Spiritborn at the start of the base campaign rather than waiting until they begin the expansion’s story. The expansion was announced to launch on October 8. Check the current game information for the latest availability details.

The Diablo IV Spiritborn class offers four distinct guardian themes, flexible build choices, and fast, close-range combat. Whether you focus on one animal or combine their skills, the Spirit Hall and varied abilities provide practical ways to tailor the class to your preferred playstyle.
