The Midnight Walk is a first-person puzzle adventure that pairs a dark, unsettling world with a handcrafted visual style. Its clay-like characters and environments are digitally animated, but each figure is sculpted by hand before being scanned into the game. That process gives the adventure a distinctive, imperfect look, while its use of light, stealth, and a cheerful companion adds contrast to the horror.

The Midnight Walk’s Handmade Visual Style
During a gameplay presentation, co-director Olov Redmalm showed a workspace filled with sculpted characters and scenery. The team uses a small, brightly lit scanning box to bring these physical pieces into a digital format. Modern phone cameras are used to scan the sculptures, rather than relying on a traditional 3D modelling program to create every asset.
The developers gave two reasons for choosing this approach: hand-sculpting preserves tiny details and imperfections that can be difficult to reproduce digitally, and the process is easier for their team. Although the animation itself is digital rather than true stop-motion, the handmade forms help create the impression of a miniature world.
What to notice: Look closely at the characters and surroundings as you play. Their uneven, tactile surfaces are part of the atmosphere, helping the game feel different from a world built entirely from polished digital models.

Light, Darkness, and Puzzle Mechanics
You play as the Burnt One, travelling through a dangerous landscape while avoiding monsters and bringing light back to the world. The visual design makes the contrast between darkness and visibility immediately clear: the character begins with a blurry view and receives a pair of eyes that reveals the grim clay environment.
Closing your eyes is also a dedicated action. It can reveal secrets or help you avoid certain dangerous creatures, giving the mechanic a playful connection to the idea of a child pretending something frightening is only a dream. When exploring, consider how changing your view might affect what you can see or avoid.
Matches are another important tool. They light torches and help solve puzzles, but each match burns down as it is used. That gradual burn works as a built-in timer, so it can be useful to take a moment to understand a puzzle before striking a match. The matches are oversized, two-handed tools, reinforcing the game’s miniature, handcrafted look.
Potboy’s Role in the Journey
Potboy, a cute companion with a pot for a head, can light distant lanterns by shooting embers from his scalp. He can also squeeze through narrow openings and be launched from cannon-like pipes. His friendly expressions stand out against the distorted landscape, making him both a practical helper and an emotional centre of the adventure.

A Cozy Horror Adventure
The developers describe The Midnight Walk as a “cozy horror” game. The combination may sound contradictory, but its handcrafted, storybook-like figures soften some of the menace. The visual approach also recalls stop-motion films such as Coraline and The Nightmare Before Christmas, which can give the eerie setting a familiar, nostalgic quality.
The early gameplay follows a relatively direct path. You move forward, avoid monsters, light candles, and use the eye-closing ability to deal with obstacles. Later, the challenge increases in a town occupied by enemies called Grinners. A matchstick gun provides a longer range for lighting candles, but navigating among the enemies requires patience and careful movement.
For players, the shift is worth keeping in mind: the early sections introduce the main tools, while later encounters place more pressure on how and when you use them. Watching enemy movement and avoiding unnecessary risks can matter as much as solving the puzzle in front of you.
Why The Midnight Walk Stands Out
The Midnight Walk brings together handmade sculptures, unsettling creatures, and practical light-based puzzles in a world that is both frightening and oddly inviting. Its distinctive aesthetic is not just decoration: matches, changing visibility, and Potboy all connect the visual concept to the way the game is played. The result is a memorable cozy horror experience for players who enjoy atmospheric adventures and puzzles with a tense edge.
The preview described the game as scheduled for release on May 8. The Midnight Walk’s appeal lies in how consistently it uses its handmade style to support its story, characters, and gameplay.
