VP Of Development Discusses Presentation Improvements

NBA 2K26 presentation improvements aim to make each game feel more like a live basketball event, with updates to arena visuals, crowd behavior, celebrations, and commentary. Visual Concepts VP of NBA 2K development Erick Boenisch discussed how the team approached these changes, including the small venue-specific details that help build a convincing atmosphere.

NBA 2K26 presentation improvements to arenas and visuals

The development team reviews all 30 NBA arenas each year because details such as banners, lighting, and court finishes can change. Boenisch described how the Lakers’ retired jerseys and championship banners were updated after the team noticed that their in-game placement no longer matched the real arena. The aim is to keep even high-up camera views accurate, whether or not players regularly notice them.

New shaders refine the appearance of player skin, muscles, uniforms, and court surfaces. Arena lighting has also been adjusted, including the way haze from pyrotechnics lingers and affects the light at the start of play. Courts receive individual tuning to reflect their real-world finishes: some have a flatter look, while others appear glossier. For players, these surface and lighting changes are easiest to spot during gameplay, when the court remains visible throughout the action.

More varied crowds and game-day atmosphere

NBA 2K26 doubles the number of crowd character models and animation instances. Fans have a wider range of ages, ethnicities, body types, heads, and outfits, including more lifestyle-brand clothing. The increased animation variety is intended to reduce the impression that large groups of spectators move in unison.

Supporter props include rally towels, foam fingers, and rubber chickens, which can appear during notable moments or special games. Some fans also wear LED wristbands for coordinated light displays during introductions and other major moments. To see these details, pay attention to the crowd during pre-game presentations and momentum-changing plays.

Awards, banners, and team-specific details

The NBA Cup is integrated into the game, and ceremonies celebrate all seven NBA regular-season trophies. Award presentations take place during the winning player’s first game of the following season. Championship banners are also raised into the rafters, creating a visible record of a team’s achievements.

These banners can update as players earn more titles and awards in MyNBA and MyCAREER. The game also includes arena-specific details across all 30 NBA venues, with local public-address announcers and broadcast elements helping each home court feel distinct. In franchise or career modes, these celebrations give players a way to see progress reflected in the arena over time.

Commentary responds to the action

Tim Legler joins the commentary team, alongside Kevin Harlan, Greg Anthony, Stan Van Gundy, Shams Charania, and other contributors. Additional international correspondents have also been added. According to Boenisch, the broadcast is designed to change with the situation rather than maintain the same tone throughout a game.

Commentators can hold longer conversations earlier in a matchup and deliver league updates during the second or early third quarter. When a close game reaches the fourth quarter, the commentary becomes more focused and urgent. This makes the stakes easier to follow without needing to rely only on the scoreboard.

Playoff presentation and practical takeaways

Playoff games receive their own presentation touches, including custom graphics, bracket information, and a higher-energy commentary style. The broadcast can also refer to regular-season results between opponents, adding context to a postseason matchup. These changes are intended to make a conference finals or NBA Finals game feel different from an ordinary regular-season contest.

For players, the most noticeable updates are likely to be the court materials, crowd reactions, and commentary that reflects the score and game situation. Arena-specific details and evolving banners add extra context, especially across a longer MyNBA or MyCAREER save.

NBA 2K26 is scheduled to arrive on September 5 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Switch 2, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Switch, and PC. Overall, NBA 2K26 presentation improvements focus on combining visual refinements with more responsive crowds, meaningful celebrations, and commentary shaped by the action.
