Renovating A Haunted Hotel Isn’t Easy, But It Is Quite Musical

There Are No Ghosts at the Grand brings together hotel renovation, supernatural mysteries, exploration and musical storytelling. Developed by Friday Sundae, the game follows Chris David, an American who inherits a rundown hotel in a seaside British village. A preview of the game revealed a distinctive mix of hands-on restoration, eerie locations and songs influenced by British music.

There Are No Ghosts at the Grand: Renovation Meets Mystery

Chris arrives at the crumbling Grand with plenty of work to do. A fictional renovation device, combining the feel of a power-washer with a sci-fi tool, can clean, repaint and help rearrange spaces. Players can also make choices about paint and furniture placement, giving the restoration tasks room for personal style.

Renovation is not limited to the hotel. Restoring other locations can reveal memories and ghostly flashbacks, offering clues about the village’s hidden past. For players who enjoy environmental puzzles, it is worth looking closely at each area: changes to a space can be part of uncovering its history.

A British Musical Soundtrack With a Strange Twist

The game’s musical elements grew out of its ghost-story premise rather than being the original plan. Writer and creative director Anil Glendinning said the team first wanted to create a British-set ghost story with the unsettling atmosphere of television shows they watched growing up.

Instead of focusing on traditional show tunes, the songs draw on ska, punk and reggae. Glendinning cited The Specials, The Clash, Madness and The Selector as influences. That sound fits the setting: a small British seaside town where unsettling events sit alongside lively musical moments.

In one scene, Mayor Greene sings to Chris over a catchy guitar-led rhythm. Players can respond musically, and their choice may affect their relationship with her. The preview did not establish the precise consequences, so the longer-term impact of these decisions remains to be seen.

Puzzles, Bunkers and Eerie Encounters

A boat trip to investigate the source of a mysterious black goo takes an unexpected turn. After a crash leaves Chris seeking shelter, the story moves to an abandoned World War II bunker. The location combines atmospheric scares with puzzle-solving and exploration.

The puzzles shown in the Gamescom demo were adjusted to be less challenging than those planned for the final game, according to Glendinning. The completed experience is expected to offer harder mysteries and more information to uncover. The bunker also provides a place to create a bedroom, while renovation work in other areas can trigger scenes connected to the town’s past.

The preview’s escape sequence features a tense chase involving unsettling chair-like monsters. Other unusual elements include a talking cat and a listening station receiving disturbing signals, adding to the game’s offbeat atmosphere.

What Makes the Game Stand Out

There Are No Ghosts at the Grand stands out for combining practical renovation activities with dialogue choices, musical interludes, environmental puzzles and horror. Rather than relying on one feature alone, its appeal comes from how these elements share the same setting and story.

The preview suggested that players who enjoy restoring spaces may find the renovation tools approachable, while mystery and horror fans can explore the bunker, search for clues and follow the village’s secrets. The game was described as planned for 2026; check for updated release information before making plans to play.

With a haunted-hotel premise, British ska-inspired songs and mysteries woven into its renovation gameplay, There Are No Ghosts at the Grand offers an unusual take on the supernatural adventure. Its blend of restoration, exploration and musical storytelling is the main reason to keep an eye on the game.
