A Promising Battle Royale (No, Seriously)

Arkheron combines battle royale survival with isometric action, team-based looting, and a dark fantasy setting. Developed by Bonfire Studios, it pits 15 teams of three against one another inside a towering dungeon. The objective is to reach the top floor and be the last team standing. A two-hour hands-on preview offered an early look at how its distinctive mechanics fit together, even if reaching the final floor proved difficult.

Arkheron’s battle royale structure

The battle royale format is only one part of Arkheron’s appeal. Its rotating isometric camera and reticle-based aiming give combat a feel closer to a third-person shooter than a traditional top-down action game. Attacks travel toward the reticle, so players need to consider both aim and the range of their weapons and abilities.

Matches take place across the floors of a foreboding tower. To advance, a team must enter a circular room and survive until it teleports them upward. Only one team can move on from each room, turning progression into a tense encounter with another trio. The practical tip is to coordinate before entering: positioning and ability use can matter as much as dealing damage.

Gear and Eternals shape each match

Players control customizable mystical avatars and collect weapons and equipment associated with the Eternals, powerful beings in the game’s world. At launch, the available gear pool is set to rotate through 10 of the game’s 12 Eternals. Their equipment ranges from ranged weapons to close-combat options, alongside items such as amulets and crowns that provide stat boosts.

Wearing at least two pieces of equipment tied to the same Eternal activates a set bonus. Collecting four pieces lets the avatar transform into that Eternal and gain increased damage, health, and other benefits. Gear appears in chests across the tower’s dungeon-like floors and can also drop from AI-controlled enemies. Because the available sets rotate, players may need to adjust their approach rather than rely on one fixed build.

Teamwork matters beyond combat

Arkheron encourages teammates to share useful equipment. Players can mark gear that would benefit someone else in their trio, making it easier to coordinate around the items they find. If a player discovers equipment that a teammate already owns, they can use it to upgrade that teammate’s item to a higher rarity and power tier.

This system gives teams a direct way to support one another instead of treating every useful item as individual loot. When collecting gear, check what your teammates are using before deciding whether an item is best kept or used to improve an existing piece.

Why Arkheron stands out

As the match progresses, a magical storm closes in and environmental dangers—including giant worm-like demons—add pressure to encounters. These threats can turn a straightforward three-versus-three fight into a chaotic situation that rewards clear teamwork. Using abilities, attacks, and positioning thoughtfully is more effective than simply mashing buttons when the action gets hectic.

A short preview cannot establish how Arkheron will fare in the crowded battle royale genre, or how its systems will develop after launch. Still, its combination of isometric presentation, shooter-like aiming, changing equipment sets, and tower-based progression gives it a different feel from many battle royales built around conventional shooting. The game was expected to launch later that year, and a demo was scheduled to become available the following day as part of the February Steam Next Fest.

For players curious about a team-focused alternative to familiar battle royale formats, Arkheron is worth keeping an eye on. Its rotating Eternal gear and cooperative upgrade options give each team practical reasons to adapt, while its floor-by-floor fights make survival as much about coordination as combat.
