Time Is Relative: The Video Game

The Exodus video game is a science-fiction role-playing shooter built around space exploration, consequential choices, and a striking twist on the passage of time. Set roughly 40,000 years in the future, it follows a Traveler exploring distant planets and ships while facing threats that could determine the fate of their home world.

What Is the Exodus Video Game About?

Players take the role of Jun Aslan, a character who can be male or female. Jun is a Traveler with the rare ability to interact with ancient celestial technology. Their home planet is not Earth: it experienced environmental collapse thousands of years ago, and the story’s larger stakes involve trying to protect it.

Jun’s journey includes decisions about allies, enemies, and romantic relationships. Those choices are part of the game’s role-playing focus, alongside combat and exploration. For players who enjoy story-led science-fiction adventures, the key detail to watch is how these decisions affect relationships and events over the course of the story.

Time Dilation and the Game’s World

Time dilation is one of Exodus’s central story concepts. Traveling to certain planets can cause time to pass much faster back home than it does for Jun. A trip that takes only a few hours for the Traveler could mean that years have gone by on their home world.

This mechanic gives exploration potential consequences beyond the immediate mission. It also raises questions about what Jun might return to after traveling. The exact effects of time dilation on gameplay and story outcomes have not been fully shown, so those details remain something to look for in future updates.

Awakened animals and familiar touches

Humans are not the only familiar presence in this far-future setting. Some animals have become intelligent and can speak. Characters shown or mentioned include an elephant shopkeeper, a giant wolf companion, and an octopus who travels in a large mechanical suit. A “very interesting raccoon” was also teased as a favorite awakened animal.

These details add variety to the cast and offer a lighter contrast to the game’s themes of planetary survival. They may also make exploration more memorable, so pay attention to side characters as well as the main mission.

Exodus Gameplay: Combat and Exploration

Combat uses a third-person cover-shooter format. In the gameplay shown, Jun moves between platforms using a grapple, briefly turns invisible to reach cover or approach enemies, and performs stealth takedowns. These abilities suggest that encounters can involve more than simply exchanging gunfire.

Jun can also use hacking tools, although little of that system has been demonstrated so far. Alongside conventional weapons, the character can throw a thruster grenade that rockets toward a powerful turret. When approaching an encounter, players may be able to combine cover, movement, stealth, and gadgets, though the full range of options is not yet clear.

Because the preview showed several tools within one encounter, it is worth watching for how freely they can be combined in the finished game. The amount of control players have over combat approaches could help distinguish each mission.

The Team and the Wider Exodus Universe

Exodus is being developed by Archetype Entertainment, a studio founded by former BioWare developers. James Ohlen, who spent more than two decades at BioWare and served as its senior creative director, leads the studio. Writer Drew Karpyshyn and former BioWare team member Chad Robertson are also among the developers involved. Actor Matthew McConaughey plays C.C. Orlev, though the scale of that character’s role in the wider story remains uncertain.

The game is part of a broader fictional universe. It has two prequel novels by Peter F. Hamilton, an animated short in Secret Level, and a tabletop game, with more projects planned. These works provide additional context, but the game’s story and mechanics can be assessed on their own as more details emerge.

How Exodus Compares to Mass Effect

Exodus shares several qualities with Mass Effect: it is a third-person science-fiction RPG shooter with narrative choices and a large spacefaring setting. That resemblance is understandable given the developers’ backgrounds, but it does not yet establish how similar the two games will feel in practice.

Exodus will need to build its own identity through its characters, world, and time-dilation system. For now, the most useful things to follow are further demonstrations of the story choices, the consequences of interplanetary travel, and how the combat tools work together.

What to Know About the Exodus Video Game

The Exodus video game combines space exploration, character-driven decisions, third-person combat, and a setting where journeys can cause years to pass back home. Its premise and creative team invite comparisons with established sci-fi RPGs, while its time-dilation concept offers a distinct source of tension. As more gameplay and story details are revealed, those features will show whether Exodus can establish a world and identity of its own.
