A Pleasant Surprise For A Lapsed Fan

Turok: Origins brings the dinosaur-hunting franchise back as a cooperative shooter, with missions across alien worlds and the option to play solo. Its mix of customizable character classes, fast-paced combat, and familiar prehistoric threats could make it an appealing choice for shooter fans, even for players who have not followed the series since its earlier games.

What to expect from Turok: Origins

Developed by Saber Interactive with Unreal Engine 5, Turok: Origins is a prequel set many years before 1997’s Turok: Dinosaur Hunter. Players take the role of futuristic warriors from the ancient Order of the Turok, fighting the Xenia, an alien reptilian race seeking dominance across the universe. The campaign sends players on missions across multiple planets, where hostile wildlife and dinosaurs create additional dangers.

The story campaign is expected to run for roughly 12 hours. Players choose from three classes: Cougar, Bison, or Raven. Cougar specializes in weapons and offense, Bison focuses on defensive support, and Raven favors ranged combat. Each class has its own strengths, but all have access to substantial firepower.

Classes, customization, and co-op play

Teams can include players using the same class, so a group does not have to choose one of each type. Game designer Carlos de Maria Castillo says the game is balanced for different class combinations and synergies. Loadout customization also helps players using the same class develop distinct play styles.

Turok: Origins supports solo play as a fully offline experience, without bots filling empty team slots. For co-op, players can join or leave during a session. The game also accommodates players at different points in the story, and participants keep currency and upgrade resources earned together for use in their own games. This setup can make it easier to team up without losing progress.

Combat, exploration, and mission design

Players can switch between first-person and third-person views with a button press. Each class has three weapons and four special abilities that recharge over time. The Cougar can use a shotgun-like blaster and unleash a powerful sonic attack, while the Raven can fire a bow equipped with explosive laser arrows. The Bison can create a protective barrier for teammates.

Enemies close to defeat can be finished with an execution move. Missions also add smaller objectives to the firefights. In one example, players must disable shield generators before attacking a larger target. Boss encounters, including a Tyrannosaurus Rex carrying rocket launchers on its back, reward coordination. A scanner can reveal weak points and help players focus their attacks.

Exploration offers another reason to look beyond the main route. Hidden areas, special enemy encounters, and collectibles such as weapon skins can be found along the way. Platforming sections add variety, including grapple-hook traversal across gaps and hazards, as well as jumps between waterwheel platforms in an ancient temple. Take time to check side paths when the action allows; they may contain useful discoveries or optional challenges.

Replay value and story outlook

Castillo describes the missions as highly replayable, with several quests taking place across large planets that players can revisit in different locations. He also says the game will include a substantial endgame, a post-campaign difficulty option, and ongoing progression systems. Saber Interactive has confirmed plans for post-launch content.

The developers describe the overarching narrative as a natural fit for the Turok universe, though how compelling the story will be remains to be seen. The cooperative action appears designed to stand on its own: players can focus on objectives, coordinate during difficult fights, or explore together between encounters. That balance may suit groups looking for a game they can enjoy in short sessions as well as players interested in revisiting missions.

Is Turok: Origins worth watching?

Turok: Origins combines dinosaur and alien enemies with flexible class builds, offline solo play, and drop-in/drop-out co-op. Its varied weapons, abilities, boss encounters, and exploration give the preview a promising foundation, while the full campaign and story still need to prove themselves. For players seeking a cooperative shooter with prehistoric action, Turok: Origins is a release to keep an eye on.
