A Stunning Character Action Game With The Spectacle Of Final Fantasy XVI

Tides of Annihilation is a character-action game that combines Arthurian legend with a fantasy version of modern London. A two-hour hands-on preview showcased cinematic battles, a distinctive companion-knight system, and environments where the everyday world collides with the realm of Avalon. The game does not yet have a release date, but the preview offered a useful look at its combat and presentation.

What Tides of Annihilation is about

Developed by Eclipse Glow Games, Tides of Annihilation follows Gwendolyn, who is caught in a London transformed by the arrival of Avalon. Familiar locations, including a museum inspired by the British Museum, are reshaped by the fantasy world. The result blends recognizable city landmarks with striking, otherworldly scenery.

The story draws on the legends of King Arthur, Camelot, and the Knights of the Round Table. That choice gives the game a different backdrop from action titles focused on Chinese mythology and history. According to director Ary Chen, the team chose a widely recognized setting and legend as part of its effort to reach an international audience.

Practical takeaway: Players interested in action games with a strong fantasy setting may find the mix of modern London and Arthurian lore especially distinctive.

Tides of Annihilation combat rewards experimentation

Gwendolyn’s basic controls will feel familiar to players of character-action games. In the preview, standard attacks used the X and Y buttons on an Xbox controller, while RB handled counters and enemy executions after their stagger bars were depleted. A powerful Burst Attack became available after filling an on-screen meter.

The combat’s more unusual element is Gwendolyn’s ability to call on Knights of the Round Table. The directional pad lets players switch between available knights, whose attacks can be combined with Gwendolyn’s own moves. The knights have different strengths: one is suited to ranged attacks, while another is more effective at close range.

This system expands the number of possible actions and encourages players to think about which companion fits each encounter. Basic attacks can carry a player through many ordinary fights, but tougher opponents demand careful timing and more deliberate use of the available abilities.

Museum stages and cinematic boss encounters

The preview’s museum setting changes as Gwendolyn moves between exhibits. In the Chinese section, enemies and music reflect the exhibit’s theme. The Japanese area leads to a separate realm and a battle against Geraint, a samurai-like opponent who transforms into an Oni demon during the second phase of the fight.

Geraint’s encounter calls for precise reactions. Players must counter certain red attacks and jump over yellow attacks, while selecting the right knight to respond to specific moves. The battle also features elaborate cinematic sequences, including dragons fighting overhead as Gwendolyn and Geraint clash.

Between major fights, players can collect Regalia outfits, find weapons with different abilities, equip badges, and solve environmental puzzles to access chests. These options can shape how Gwendolyn handles a challenge, so checking equipment before a boss fight may be worthwhile.

Equipment choices can change your strategy

Badges provide special effects, sometimes with a trade-off. For example, the Bloodbound badge increases damage and provides life steal, but continually drains health. Pairing it with a badge that boosts life steal by 25% while preventing the use of health-restoring potions creates a more aggressive play style: attacking becomes essential to staying alive.

Different fights can call for different equipment. The preview player relied on potions against the hard-hitting Geraint, but used the aggressive life-steal setup against Anubis. Anubis can create barriers that players must dash through, making movement and positioning important as well as attack timing.

Arthurian scale and a memorable finale

After the Anubis encounter, the museum appears in an Egyptian desert, with the Great Pyramids visible in the distance. Gwendolyn and her companion Niniane are pursuing a Grail Shard, and the preview’s final battle is against Mordred, who is reimagined as a young woman with Arthurian powers.

The fight begins with sword exchanges before escalating into a confrontation with the Pendragon, a giant magical dragon. Cinematic scenes lead into playable sequences, giving the battle a sense of scale reminiscent of the large boss encounters in Final Fantasy XVI. A platforming section across falling stone platforms brings the preview’s climactic sequence to a close.

There was also side content in the desert area, including reported chests, puzzles, and a side boss, though the limited preview time did not allow for a full exploration of it.

Early impressions of Tides of Annihilation

A two-hour preview cannot establish whether Tides of Annihilation will match the best character-action games, and the available material represents an early look rather than a full review. It does, however, show a game with ambitious visual set pieces, a combat system built around companion knights, and equipment choices that can meaningfully influence play.

For players following Tides of Annihilation, the key details to watch are how its layered combat develops across the full game, how much exploration and side content it offers, and when it will launch. Its blend of Arthurian fantasy, London landmarks, and spectacular boss battles makes it a notable action-game preview.
