CD Projekt begins “most intensive phase” of Witcher 4, expands team to over 500 devs

The Witcher 4 has entered what CD Projekt describes as the most intensive phase of development, with the team now numbering 513 developers. The update also offers a clearer picture of the studio’s plans for the next Witcher trilogy and a separate new expansion for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.

The Witcher 4 development team reaches 513

Speaking during a question-and-answer session following the company’s financial results, joint CEO Michał Nowakowski said development of The Witcher 4 is moving into a particularly demanding stage. The team’s reported size has grown to 513 developers.

CD Projekt has also reiterated its intention to release three new Witcher games over a six-year period, starting with The Witcher 4. The company has not provided a specific launch date for the game in this update, so the six-year plan should not be treated as a confirmed release schedule for each individual title.

For players following the project, the team size and development-stage update indicate that work is progressing, but they do not confirm gameplay details or when the game will be available. A release date and platform information should be checked against future official announcements.

New Witcher trilogy may not include expansions

Nowakowski said the upcoming trilogy will most likely not receive expansions similar to those released for The Witcher 3. That game was expanded with Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine, but CD Projekt’s current plans appear to prioritize the three main games rather than a comparable series of add-ons.

The wording is not a definitive promise that no post-launch content will ever be made. It describes the company’s present expectation, and plans could be clarified as the games progress. Players should therefore distinguish between the announced trilogy strategy and any future decisions about additional content.

The Witcher 3 expansion delayed beyond 2026

CD Projekt has also announced a third expansion for The Witcher 3, titled Songs of the Past. The project is being co-developed with Fool’s Theory and will not be released on last-generation consoles.

The expansion had been planned for 2026, but its release was moved to the following year. The stated reason was to give the team time to deliver the strongest possible experience for players. Nowakowski described the goal as creating a substantial return to The Witcher 3’s world, while suggesting its scale may be closer to Blood and Wine. He also emphasized that comparisons depend on each player’s experience.

The expansion may also renew interest in The Witcher setting ahead of The Witcher 4, but CD Projekt presented that as a secondary effect. Its main aim, according to Nowakowski, is to provide a high-quality experience for existing fans. The studio has not said that Songs of the Past is a direct prelude to the next game.

CD Projekt reports growth in Witcher revenue

In the first quarter of 2026, CD Projekt’s overall revenue increased by 6% to PLN 191 million ($52.5 million). Revenue from the Witcher intellectual property rose by 36% to PLN 44.7 million ($12.2 million).

The Witcher 3, first released in 2015, has exceeded 65 million cumulative sales. Its enduring audience helps explain why a new expansion could matter both to longtime players and to people preparing to follow the next chapter of the series.

What the update means for The Witcher 4

The key confirmed points are the 513-person development team, the start of a more intensive production phase, and CD Projekt’s plan for a three-game trilogy over six years. The studio has not confirmed a launch date for The Witcher 4, while the new Witcher 3 expansion has been delayed from its planned 2026 release.

For now, players can use these announcements to track the broader direction of the franchise, but should wait for official updates before drawing conclusions about release timing, platforms, or the trilogy’s post-launch content. The Witcher 4 remains the first planned entry in the new series of games.
