Cyan reveals abandoned prototype for new Myst game, confirms different Myst game is in development

A new Myst game is in early development at Cyan Worlds, the studio has confirmed. The announcement came alongside the public reveal of Project Anglerfish, a separate Myst-related prototype that was presented to publishers but eventually shelved. The two projects are at different stages: Anglerfish is an abandoned concept, while the new title, codenamed Mudfish, is being developed for the Myst universe.

What is known about the new Myst game?

Cyan Worlds co-heads Hannah Gamiel and Eric Anderson shared the update during the studio’s annual State of the Union address at the Mysterium fan convention on July 26. They confirmed that Mudfish is in early development, but did not announce a release window or the platforms it may support.

For now, the codename and development status are the only details available about Mudfish. Players should not assume that the game is close to release or that it will launch on any particular system until Cyan provides further information.

Project Anglerfish was shelved

Project Anglerfish was a prototype developed in 2024 and 2025. Cyan pitched it to publishers, but the project did not move forward. The studio has now released its teaser trailer publicly, offering fans a look at a concept that will not be the upcoming Mudfish game.

The distinction matters: the trailer documents a shelved prototype, rather than confirming gameplay or features for the new Myst game. Viewers should treat it as a glimpse into the studio’s development history, not as a preview of Mudfish.

Other concepts and projects from Cyan

The Anglerfish reveal formed part of a presentation segment called “Paths Not (yet) Taken.” It covered unreleased and reworked ideas developed across roughly two decades. The material included early design work for Obduction, created before that game’s eventual release, as well as projects known as Lyft and DiSC.

Looking at these concepts can help fans understand how game development involves ideas that may change or stop before release. However, the presentation did not indicate that Lyft, DiSC, or the early Obduction designs are currently active projects.

Physical editions of Myst and Riven are planned

Cyan also outlined plans for physical editions of its Myst and Riven remakes for PlayStation 5, Xbox, and PC. Console editions are set to ship on disc, while PC editions will include a digital code. No release dates were provided in the announcement, so buyers will need to wait for further details about availability.

Myst-universe novels are being reissued

Three tie-in novels are also set to return in deluxe physical editions: The Book of Atrus, The Book of Ti’ana, and The Book of D’ni. The books were originally published roughly three decades ago. Readers interested in these editions should check the eventual product details for information about formats and release timing.

What fans should take away

The key update is that the new Myst game, Mudfish, has entered early development, while Project Anglerfish remains a shelved prototype whose teaser is now public. Cyan has not yet shared a launch date or platforms for Mudfish. The planned physical game editions and novel reissues are additional developments, but their release timing has not been specified.
