Discord re-launches age verification following backlash over privacy concerns

Discord age verification is returning with additional ways for users to confirm their age without submitting a video selfie or identity document. The updated approach follows privacy concerns raised after the platform announced a verification requirement for all users.

Discord age verification adds non-biometric options

Discord co-founder and chief technology officer Stanislav Vishnevskiy said users can verify their age through credit cards, the Apple App Store, Google Play Store, Google Wallet, or AgeKey. According to Discord, AgeKey does not share personal or private data.

The company says it introduced these options as a global approach that includes alternatives to biometric checks. For users, the practical point is to review the available methods in account settings and choose an option they are comfortable using.

Why Discord changed its age-check plans

Discord first announced in February that age verification would become mandatory for all users starting in March. Following concerns about privacy, the platform postponed the rollout to the second half of 2026.

Vishnevskiy acknowledged that the company should have explained its plans and the process more clearly. Discord has since said it will publicly identify each third-party age-assurance provider. It has also published information about its age-group estimation method and included its first age-assurance data in the 2026 Transparency Report, covering launches in the UK and Australia.

These disclosures may help users understand who handles age-assurance checks and how the system is being assessed. When reviewing a verification option, consider what information it requests and consult Discord’s published vendor and methodology details.

How Discord assigns age groups

Discord says it estimates an account’s age group using signals such as account age or the servers associated with it. The process does not review messages, calls, or other content. The platform has three categories:

  • Adult: 18 or older.
  • Teen: Ages 13 to 17.
  • Unconfirmed: The platform does not yet have enough information to assign an age group.

New accounts are initially marked unconfirmed. Discord may assign a group once it has enough information, while users can also verify their age through their account settings. Anyone who does not verify can continue using Discord with limitations while the platform determines which group applies. Check the account settings for the current verification choices and any restrictions that affect your account.

What to watch as the system develops

Discord says users should assess the rollout through the accuracy of age estimates, how quickly incorrect decisions are corrected, and whether the company continues publishing relevant data. Those details matter because age-assurance systems need to balance teen safety with privacy and provide a clear way to address mistakes.

Overall, Discord age verification now includes several alternatives to video selfies and ID checks, alongside an age-estimation process and published information about vendors and methodology. Users can review the available options, understand the limits that may apply without verification, and follow future transparency updates before deciding how to proceed.
