Epic Games lays off over 1,000 employees following “downturn in Fortnite engagement”

Epic Games layoffs will affect more than 1,000 employees as the company responds to a decline in Fortnite engagement and rising costs. CEO Tim Sweeney told staff that Epic is spending substantially more than it earns and needs to reduce expenses to keep the business funded and improve its financial stability.

Why Epic Games layoffs are happening

Sweeney linked the job cuts to reduced engagement with Fortnite, which has contributed to the company spending more than it brings in. He said the layoffs, alongside more than $500 million in identified savings, are intended to put Epic in a more stable position. The additional savings include reductions in contracting and marketing, as well as closing some vacant roles.

The CEO said the decision was not driven by artificial intelligence. He explained that Epic wants to retain as many developers as possible to build games and technology, and views productivity improvements as a way to support that work.

Broader pressures across the video game industry also played a part. Sweeney pointed to slower growth, softer consumer spending, higher operating costs, and current-generation consoles selling fewer units than consoles in the previous generation. He described the market as unusually challenging, while also noting that changing conditions may create opportunities for companies that adapt successfully.

Practical context: The announced cost savings include measures beyond employee reductions. For workers and industry observers, this distinction helps explain the scale of the company’s effort to bring spending closer to revenue.

Severance and benefits for affected employees

Epic said employees affected by the cuts will receive at least four months of base pay, with additional severance based on how long they have worked at the company. Epic-paid healthcare coverage will also be extended. In the United States, employees will receive six months of paid healthcare coverage.

The company will accelerate stock options through January 2027. It will also extend equity exercise options for up to two years. These details may be important for affected staff reviewing their transition arrangements, since eligibility and timing can depend on the terms of their individual compensation.

Epic scheduled a company meeting for Thursday to discuss its roadmap in more detail. The announcement did not provide further details about that roadmap.

Epic’s previous workforce cuts

Epic’s last major round of layoffs took place in September 2023, when the company eliminated more than 800 positions—about 16% of its workforce. Two-thirds of the employees affected at that time worked in teams outside core development. Epic had moved to net-zero hiring and reduced marketing and event spending, but still fell short of achieving financial sustainability.

The 2023 cuts also affected Mediatonic, the developer of Fall Guys. In addition, 250 employees were connected with the sale of music storefront Bandcamp.

Fortnite costs and the wider business outlook

In the week before the layoffs were announced, Epic said it would raise the price of Fortnite’s in-game currency to help cover operating expenses. The company cited the increased cost of running the game as the reason for the change. Together, the currency price adjustment and workforce reductions point to efforts to address the expenses associated with maintaining Fortnite and Epic’s wider operations.

The Epic Games layoffs reflect both a reported decline in Fortnite engagement and broader challenges facing the games industry. The company says the reductions and planned savings are intended to improve financial stability, while severance, healthcare support, and equity-related measures provide assistance to affected employees during the transition.
