Fandom and GameSpot owner set to buy Balatro publisher Playstack

The proposed Playstack acquisition would bring the publisher of Balatro, Abiotic Factor, and The Rise of the Golden Idol under Integrated Media Company (IMC), the owner of Fandom and Gamespot. The agreement is conditional, so the change in ownership still depends on a shareholder vote.

Playstack acquisition: what the proposed deal includes

TruFin has agreed conditionally to sell its 84.5% stake in Playstack to IMC. TruFin has recommended that its shareholders vote in favour of the transaction. If completed, the sale is expected to generate approximately £112.4 million in net cash proceeds for TruFin.

A conditional agreement is not the same as a completed sale. The shareholder vote is an important next step, and the companies’ public statements do not indicate that Playstack’s ownership has already transferred. Readers following the deal should look for confirmation of the vote and any subsequent completion announcement.

What Playstack says will stay the same

Playstack founder and CEO Harvey Elliott addressed the proposal on the company’s website on May 22. He described the investment as the beginning of a new chapter, while saying the ownership change would not alter the team, strategy, or focus on publishing premium indie games. Elliott also said operations would continue as usual during the transition and thanked TruFin for its support over the previous seven years.

In a statement dated May 21, TruFin CEO James van den Bergh characterized the disposal as an important milestone for TruFin and part of its approach to allocating capital and creating value. He also expressed confidence in IMC as a partner for Playstack’s next stage.

Playstack’s financial performance

TruFin previously highlighted Playstack’s record of commercial returns, reporting that 85% of the publisher’s games delivered a positive return. Playstack generated £55.3 million in gross revenue during 2025, up 24% year on year. That amount represented 83.9% of TruFin’s total revenue.

These figures help explain why the publisher is significant to TruFin, but gross revenue and net proceeds from a sale are different measures. The £55.3 million figure relates to Playstack’s reported revenue, while approximately £112.4 million is the expected net cash proceeds to TruFin from the proposed transaction.

Who is Integrated Media Company?

IMC is a vehicle for assets and private equity firm TPG. The company says it seeks to acquire attractive businesses and work with their existing management teams to support sustainable value creation. Its portfolio includes Fandom, the wiki platform; Gamespot, a games media brand; Screen Junkies, a YouTube brand; and businesses in entertainment, football, and ecommerce.

Playstack’s leadership has also discussed the success of Balatro and the confidence that the game’s performance brought to the company. However, the proposed transaction announcement does not specify changes to individual games, release plans, or publishing arrangements.

What the Playstack acquisition could mean next

For now, the key point is that the Playstack acquisition remains subject to shareholder approval. Playstack has stated that its team, strategy, and publishing focus are continuing as usual, while the financial terms describe a proposed sale of TruFin’s majority stake. Further details about the future relationship between Playstack and IMC will depend on the transaction’s progress and any later announcements.
