The GDC Awards 2026 will recognise two influential figures in game development: Don Daglow will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award, while Rebecca Heineman will be honoured posthumously with the Ambassador Award. The awards highlight both long-running creative contributions and advocacy that has helped shape the games industry.

GDC Awards 2026 honours for Daglow and Heineman
Daglow has worked in games for more than five decades. He began his career as one of the five original programmers who developed games for Mattel’s Intellivision. Over the course of his career, he has designed, programmed and produced more than 100 games, and is credited with several innovations in the industry.
In 1988, Daglow founded Stormfront Studios, originally named Beyond Software. His Lifetime Achievement Award recognises the breadth and duration of his work in game development. For readers following the awards, this honour is distinct from awards for a particular game released during the year: it celebrates an individual’s wider career and influence.
Rebecca Heineman’s games and advocacy
Heineman, who passed away last year, spent 45 years in the games industry and contributed to more than 250 titles. Her credits include The Bard’s Tale 3, Dragon Wars, Wolfenstein 3D and Doom for 3DO.
She founded Contraband Entertainment in 1999. The studio worked on games including Myth 3, Baldur’s Gate 2 and Icewind Dale. Heineman also led programming projects for Electronic Arts, Amazon and Sony.
The Ambassador Award recognises people who help video games move forward through advocacy and action. Heineman was known for supporting the LGBTQ+ community and drawing attention to accessibility and diversity. These efforts form an important part of the reason for her posthumous recognition, alongside her work on games and technology.
What to expect at the GDC ceremony
GDC president Nina Brown said the awards honour creators whose work has helped shape the industry. She noted that Daglow and Heineman’s innovations continue to influence how developers create games, and described creativity, conviction and experimentation as forces that advance the medium.
At the previous year’s ceremony, Remedy creative director Sam Lake received the Lifetime Achievement Award, while independent game designer Lucas Pope received the Pioneer Award. The nominations for the 26th annual GDC Awards were announced in January. Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 earned eight nominations across nine categories, including Game of the Year.
The ceremony is scheduled for March 12 during the GDC Festival of Gaming in San Francisco. Readers interested in the event can distinguish the individual honours announced here from the broader nominations, which recognise games across award categories. The GDC Awards 2026 will celebrate Daglow’s decades of development work and Heineman’s lasting contributions as a creator and advocate.
