IO Interactive “had no choice” but to delay Switch 2 launch of 007 First Light for a third time

The 007 First Light Switch 2 release date has been pushed back for a third time, with IO Interactive now targeting March 2027 for the Nintendo console version. The studio says the additional time will help it refine the port and deliver a more polished experience.

Why the 007 First Light Switch 2 release date changed

Technical producer Cristina Vega said the delay followed a demanding period of development, alongside requests from the marketing team and other considerations. IO Interactive concluded that moving the launch to March 2027 was the best option for the team and for players waiting for the Switch 2 edition.

Although another postponement may disappoint fans, the extra time is intended to give the developers room to complete the remaining work. Vega said the port is progressing well, but has not yet entered its final stage. That phase will include performance improvements and other fine-tuning.

Vega also suggested the work could be completed before the planned launch date. However, the public release window remains March 2027, so players should use that date for planning rather than treating an earlier finish as a confirmed release.

What to expect from the Switch 2 version

IO Interactive aims to make the Switch 2 edition feel as close as possible to the PC experience. The team is adapting the game to the console’s hardware while trying to preserve the qualities that matter most during play.

Vega acknowledged that the console’s memory and other hardware limits mean some compromises are necessary. She said the developers are making those trade-offs in areas they consider less important to the overall experience, rather than simply reducing the number of non-player characters.

How the port may differ

One example is the detail shown on objects at a distance. On PC, those objects can retain a higher level of quality, while the Switch 2 version may display them with slightly less detail. The studio’s stated aim is to keep such differences from having a major impact on how players experience the game.

  • Performance: The team is still working on performance and final adjustments.
  • Visual detail: Some distant objects may appear at a lower level of detail on Switch 2.
  • Gameplay presentation: IO Interactive says it is prioritising compromises it believes will be less noticeable to players.

For players deciding whether to wait for the portable-console edition, the key point is that the port is still in development. The studio has not announced a new technical specification or a more precise launch day, so the confirmed information remains the March 2027 window and the stated focus on optimisation.

What the delay means for players

The third postponement gives IO Interactive more time to prepare the Switch 2 version, but it also extends the wait for Nintendo players. Vega said the goal is to make 007 First Light available in a complete form across platforms, while adapting the game to the capabilities of each system.

The article also reports that IO Interactive’s James Bond adaptation sold 4 million copies within three months of its May release earlier this year. For Switch 2 owners, however, the 007 First Light Switch 2 release date remains March 2027, with performance work and final refinements still to come.
