Larian will not use generative AI for Divinity concept art

Larian Studios has confirmed that Divinity concept art will not be created with generative AI. The Belgian developer says it is removing these tools from the concept art process to make the origin of the artwork clear, while continuing to explore other possible uses of AI during development.

Divinity concept art will be made without generative AI

In a Reddit ask-me-anything session, Larian CEO and co-founder Swen Vincke said the studio would not use generative AI to produce concept art for the upcoming RPG. He also clarified that no concept art for the game had been generated by AI.

Vincke acknowledged that earlier comments had caused confusion. He had previously told Bloomberg that Larian had explored using AI in the creation of Divinity. Some readers understood this to mean the studio was using AI to make concept art or replace concept artists. Vincke later explained that the technology had been used to explore ideas, not to replace the artists creating the game’s concept art.

Larian’s decision draws a clear boundary: generative AI will not be part of the concept art development process. For players following the discussion, that distinction matters because experimenting with tools internally is not the same as using AI-generated artwork in the finished game.

How Larian plans to use AI during development

Although the studio is excluding generative AI from concept art, Vincke said Larian is still testing AI tools across departments. The goal is to see whether they can help teams explore and refine ideas more quickly. He said faster iteration could support a more focused development process and contribute to better gameplay.

These comments describe an intended use, not a guarantee that AI will improve the game or that it will be used in every department. The studio has not ruled out generative AI for all internal work; its stated restriction is specifically on using these tools during concept art development.

What Larian said about in-game assets

Vincke also addressed the possibility of using generative AI to make creative assets that appear in Divinity. He said Larian would need to be certain about the origins of the training data and have the consent of the people who created it. If the studio uses a generative AI model to create in-game assets, he said, it would be trained on data Larian owns.

This is a conditional statement about the studio’s approach, not confirmation that AI-generated assets will appear in the game. Readers assessing future announcements should distinguish between AI used to support development and assets generated for the final release.

What the announcement means for Divinity

Larian’s clarification followed public discussion about its earlier remarks on AI. The studio says its concept art will remain outside the generative AI process, while it continues to assess whether AI tools can help with other development tasks under specific data and consent conditions.

Larian’s Baldur’s Gate 3 has sold more than 20 million copies. The developer announced a new entry in the Divinity franchise at The Game Awards 2025. For now, the clearest commitment regarding Divinity concept art is that it will not be generated using generative AI.
