Rockstar formed a new LA-based team to develop more realistic NPCs for Grand Theft Auto 6

GTA 6 NPCs are being designed with more attention to detail, as Rockstar Games works to make the world of its upcoming game feel more realistic and interactive. A Los Angeles-based team of writers, directors and producers has been formed to develop these characters and shape the details surrounding them.

How Rockstar is developing GTA 6 NPCs

Rockstar North co-head Aaron Garbut told The New York Times that the team approaches individual characters with an art-directed perspective. The work extends beyond a character’s appearance: the developers also consider how a room is arranged and what its contents suggest about the people who use it.

For example, environmental details may include where people sit, what they drink and what objects are left behind. Wall pictures can reflect the people associated with a room, including details such as tattoos and family members. Together, these touches are intended to make locations feel considered rather than randomly assembled.

For players, these environmental details can make exploration more rewarding. Take time to look around interiors and public spaces instead of focusing only on objectives; visual clues may help convey a location’s character and atmosphere.

Building on Red Dead Redemption 2

Rockstar North co-head Rob Nelson described GTA 6 as an evolution of the studio’s work on Red Dead Redemption 2. He said the team had already considered how to bring a similar level of interactive detail to a modern setting, where the environment is larger and more densely populated.

The scale figures shared by Rockstar point to that ambition. GTA 6 is said to include more than 600,000 NPC animations, compared with 300,000 in Red Dead Redemption 2 and 55,000 in Grand Theft Auto 5. Rockstar also says Vice City is twice the size of Los Santos, while the GTA 6 map is three times larger than the map in Red Dead Redemption 2.

These figures offer a sense of the project’s scope, but animation totals and map size do not, on their own, determine how engaging a game feels. The way characters and environments respond during play is also important, so gameplay footage can provide useful context alongside headline numbers.

What has been said about AI and monetization

Nelson also confirmed on the Kinda Funny Gamescast that GTA 6 will not use generative AI and will not include microtransactions. These statements address two topics that many players consider when evaluating a major release.

An extended preview on Netflix showcased the game’s story, combat and gameplay, as well as examples of its interactive world. Sensor Tower data indicated that Netflix’s US mobile viewership rose by 35% during the preview. Reports also said that Netflix and Twitch experienced outages around that time.

What the NPC details could mean for players

The new team and the reported animation count suggest that Rockstar is placing significant emphasis on how characters and places contribute to the game world. The practical measure will be how consistently those details come together during exploration and gameplay.

For now, GTA 6 NPCs are one part of a broader effort to expand the detail and density established in Red Dead Redemption 2. Players can use future gameplay footage to assess how the characters behave in context, rather than relying on scale figures alone.
