Sales of Fallout games spike over Christmas following launch of new TV season

Fallout game sales climbed during the holiday period following the premiere of season two of the television adaptation. Data from Video Game Insights and Alinea also pointed to increased player activity across several games in the franchise, although sales estimates and player-count measures describe different kinds of engagement.

Fallout game sales increased across platforms

Video Game Insights reported significant rises in both sales and engagement across platforms. Its daily estimates for Steam, PlayStation and Xbox show that Fallout 4 sold more than 12,000 units on December 29.

Further increases appeared on January 7. Fallout: New Vegas reached nearly 8,000 estimated units sold that day, while Fallout 3 reached 3,000. These figures are estimates of daily sales across the listed platforms, not lifetime totals.

  • Fallout 4: more than 12,000 estimated units sold on December 29.
  • Fallout: New Vegas: nearly 8,000 estimated units sold on January 7.
  • Fallout 3: 3,000 estimated units sold on January 7.

For readers comparing these numbers, it is useful to note the date and platform scope attached to each estimate. A daily sales figure does not show how many people were playing at the same time, and totals may differ between individual storefronts.

Player activity rose after the premiere

Daily active users (DAUs)—the number of people playing on a given day—also increased for Fallout 4 and Fallout 76 in the days after Christmas. Season two premiered on December 16. On Xbox, Fallout 4 reached a peak of almost 100,000 players in early January. On the premiere date, Fallout 76 had the highest DAU figure among the games discussed; the game is available through Game Pass.

Steam player counts also grew

Alinea’s data showed a notable increase in returning players on Steam. Their weekly average was 60,000 before the second season premiered, followed by a peak of 120,000. Concurrent players on Steam—people playing at the same time—also doubled, rising from an average of 20,000 to more than 40,000 after the season returned.

These are separate measurements: weekly returning players, concurrent players and daily active users should not be treated as interchangeable. When comparing audience trends, check which measure is being reported and whether it covers one platform or several.

Fallout 76 recorded a major engagement peak

Across all platforms, Alinea described the second season as a major catalyst for engagement with Fallout 76. Its reported DAUs rose from a pre-release baseline of 167,000 players to a peak of 235,000 on December 30.

The reported increases followed the television season’s launch and the holiday period, making the timing clear without proving that one factor alone caused every change. Taken together, the figures show a broad rise in interest: Fallout game sales grew on several dates, while player activity climbed across Fallout 4 and Fallout 76 in particular.
