A Faithfully Bloody Adaptation

Invincible VS is a 3v3 fighting game built around the franchise’s signature mix of superpowered combat and graphic violence. Its first gameplay reveal drew comparisons to Mortal Kombat, but the game’s tag-team structure, combo focus, and accessibility options point to a broader fighting-game experience. Here’s what the early build and development team reveal about its fighters, arenas, and planned story.

Invincible VS and its fighting-game roots

Invincible VS is being developed by Quarter Up, a Skybound studio that includes veterans of Killer Instinct. That team’s experience with combo-driven combat helped shape the game’s emphasis on chaining attacks, managing resources, and creating exciting moments during matches.

Game director Dave Hall says the developers wanted to return to fighting games and saw room for another prominent 3v3 title. The team hopes the format will bring the lively momentum of tag battles to a new audience, while giving experienced players plenty to master.

Teams are built around three broad fighter styles: Grappler, Striker, and Ranged. These categories help players consider how characters might complement each other. The early build featured Invincible, Atom Eve, Bulletproof, and Thula, with additional empty spaces visible on the character-select screen. The final roster was not specified.

Distinct fighters and approachable combos

Creating fighters who feel different from one another was a key design challenge. Hall explained that, although many characters in the franchise rely on punches, the game needed a wider range of combat styles so team choices would matter.

  • Invincible: A rushdown fighter suited to closing distance and applying pressure.
  • Atom Eve: Most effective when she can attack from range.
  • Bulletproof: A more technical character with high-low attacks.
  • Thula: Uses her hair blade to control mid-range engagements.

Basic attacks of different strengths can be linked into combos, and special moves add impact to an offense. Players can use auto-combos to get started, while assist calls, directional assists, and mid-combo character swaps offer additional options. A useful approach for newcomers is to learn one character’s basic combo first, then add assists once the timing feels comfortable.

Destructive arenas and graphic finishers

The game includes two arena types: Devastation Arenas and Destination Arenas. When a new fighter enters, the incoming character collides with the one already on screen, creating a destructive shockwave that builds as the match continues. Certain attacks can also create an opening to launch an opponent into a Destination Stage, which appears to be selected at random.

Damage is reflected in the characters’ appearance as well as the arenas. Fighters show the effects of battle, and even the winner may end a match covered in blood. Overkill moves can dismember the character on the receiving end, so the presentation stays close to the franchise’s notably graphic tone.

Designed for new and competitive players

Quarter Up says Invincible VS is intended for both fighting-game newcomers and competitive players. Auto-combos offer a straightforward way to begin, while combo routes, meter management, and decisions about when to spend resources provide deeper systems to explore. Hall also said the team regularly tests the game with experienced members of the fighting-game community to help keep competitive play in mind.

For first-time players, starting with a simple team and practicing assists in training or casual matches can make the 3v3 format easier to understand. More advanced players can experiment with character combinations and resource use to build pressure and extend attacks.

Story and release platforms

The developers have not shared specific story-mode details, but Skybound Games executive vice president and general manager Chris Paulson said the game will feature an original story within the Invincible universe. According to Paulson, the creative team behind the animated series is contributing to the story and character interactions. Comic co-creators Robert Kirkman, Cory Walker, and Ryan Ottley have also reviewed the artwork for authenticity.

Invincible VS is scheduled to arrive in 2026 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. Its combination of tag-team combat, accessible controls, and graphic action could appeal to both longtime fans and players discovering the franchise through the game. For anyone interested in Invincible VS, the key details to watch are the final roster, story information, and how the team-based mechanics develop before release.
