A Game Pass for indie games: meet Indie Pass, a $6.99-a-month subscription launching with 70 titles

Indie Pass is a $6.99-a-month subscription service designed to help players discover independent games and give smaller studios another way to reach an audience. The service is set to launch on April 13 with around 70 titles, including games from publisher Indie.io’s catalogue.

Its library is intended to change over time, with new games added regularly. Rather than trying to offer every available title, Indie Pass aims to present a curated selection for players who enjoy independent releases, including shorter narrative games and titles suited to replaying.

Indie Pass: price, launch and game selection

The subscription will cost $6.99 per month. Its launch catalogue is expected to include about 70 games, among them Echoes of the Plum Grove and titles from the Dark Deity series. Indie.io plans to expand the selection by working with developers beyond its existing publishing catalogue.

Indie.io publishes more than 200 games across multiple platforms, with PC serving as its main base. The company also operates the community platform wiki.gg. Indie.io Director of Growth Jess Mitchell says the subscription is intended to build on that work by giving games more opportunities to be discovered.

Practical note: Because the catalogue is designed to rotate, players should check which games are currently included before subscribing, especially if they are interested in a particular title.

How Indie Pass revenue sharing works

Developers will receive a share of subscription revenue based on how much players engage with their games. The payment is not described as a guaranteed equal split between every title a subscriber plays. Instead, the amount developers receive is tied to player activity, such as time spent in each game.

Indie.io says it will provide participating studios with engagement analytics. Those figures can help developers understand how players are responding and inform discussions about adding more games to the service. Mitchell also says the company intends to be open with studios if a title is not attracting much demand.

For players, this means that playing many different games may affect how subscription revenue is distributed among developers. The company has not provided a detailed payout formula in the announcement, so studios considering participation may want to ask for the specific terms before signing up.

Discovering older and lesser-known games

A central goal of Indie Pass is to help games find new audiences after their initial release. Independent developers can face difficulty standing out among the large number of games arriving on digital storefronts. A subscription catalogue may offer another opportunity for older releases to be noticed, even when they are no longer receiving updates or downloadable content.

Games do not have to be exclusive to Indie Pass. Developers can release a title on the service on the same day it appears on other storefronts, and studios can also bring existing catalogue games to the subscription. The service says it is open to developers who want to participate.

Mitchell says the selection will not be limited to games with a retail price close to the monthly subscription fee. Indie.io’s catalogue includes titles priced at $5.99 and $29.99, as well as games with different lengths and play styles. Curation is intended to focus on the experience and the audience rather than matching a game’s price to the subscription cost.

Recommendations and language support

Indie Pass plans to recommend games using information such as game tags, play style and player engagement. Recommendations may also take into account whether someone uses a keyboard or controller and which languages are available. For example, a player in Poland may be shown games localised in Polish.

Session time will also help inform recommendations and may guide which games the platform invites in the future. For subscribers, checking language and control details before starting a game can help ensure it suits their preferences.

What to expect from Indie Pass

Indie Pass is positioned as a focused alternative to broader game subscriptions, with a changing collection of independent titles rather than an attempt to include every possible release. Its value will depend on the games available at a given time, how well recommendations match each player’s interests and how the service develops after launch.

For developers, the proposed model offers additional visibility and engagement-based revenue without requiring exclusivity. For players looking to explore smaller releases, Indie Pass combines a $6.99 monthly price with a curated catalogue of around 70 launch titles. Checking the current lineup and subscription terms is the most useful way to decide whether Indie Pass fits your gaming habits.
