A New Generation Of Vault Hunting

Borderlands 4 aims to refresh the series’ cooperative looter-shooter action while keeping its colorful world, offbeat humor and loot-driven combat intact. Set on the concealed planet Kairos, the game introduces new movement abilities, an expanded world and a new group of Vault Hunters. A hands-on preview suggests these changes could make exploration and combat feel more fluid without losing the franchise’s familiar identity.

Borderlands 4 brings a new tone to Kairos

The story takes place after the protective barrier around Kairos is destroyed by events at the end of Borderlands 3. The planet is ruled by the Timekeeper, who claims to value order but enforces it by enslaving its inhabitants. A new team of Vault Hunters joins a rebel group to oppose his forces and help the people of Kairos fight back.

The writing appears to rely less on frequent pop-culture and meme references than earlier entries, leaning instead on drier humor and more natural character dialogue. Comedy remains part of the experience, with Claptrap still providing some of the game’s lighter moments. For players, this shift may make the central characters and their motivations easier to follow amid the action.

Movement and exploration feel more fluid

Borderlands 4 retains the familiar loop of exploring, fighting enemies and collecting weapons, but its world is designed to feel more seamless, with fewer loading screens. The expanded movement options also make it easier to cross Kairos and approach encounters from different angles.

Players can sprint, slide, double-jump and glide. The new grappling hook adds another layer: it can help reach elevated areas and grab environmental objects to throw at nearby enemies. Combining the hook with other movement abilities allows players to climb into position, glide toward opponents and follow up with grenades or a ground-pound attack.

Senior project producer Anthony Nicholson said the development team considered what players enjoyed about movement in Borderlands 3 and looked for ways to improve it. A practical tip for combat is to use traversal as part of an attack plan: grappling to higher ground or repositioning quickly can help avoid incoming pressure while creating opportunities to strike.

Weapons, loot and equipment changes

Weapons remain central to the Borderlands experience. In the preview, guns found in chests and dropped by enemies offered different behaviors and abilities, and many felt useful regardless of rarity. That gives players room to keep a weapon they enjoy rather than replacing it automatically whenever a rarer item appears.

Nicholson explained that the team wanted players to be able to build around a favorite gun and use skills or other equipment to support it. Borderlands 4 also adds manufacturers and licensed weapon parts, which can now be combined within a single weapon to create new ability combinations.

The inventory system has been adjusted as well. Ordnance and heavy weapons share a slot with grenades, creating a more streamlined loadout arrangement. Health kits no longer appear in lockers; instead, enemies can drop health during combat. Each Vault Hunter also has a Repkit, a healing and buffing ability that operates on a cooldown. Because it does not require searching through inventory, it can be useful when health needs to be restored during a fight.

Meet the Borderlands 4 Vault Hunters

The preview featured Rafa, the Exo-Soldier, and Vex, the Dark Siren. Rafa offers a direct run-and-gun approach, but his Action Skills let him shift between ranged attacks and close-quarters combat. His Apophis Lance and Peacebreaker Cannons provide different ways to attack, while his Arc-Knives let him fight at close range.

Vex can summon allies to support her in battle. Her Dead Ringer style calls in a Reaper for melee pressure or a Specter that acts as a turret. Phase Phamiliar summons Trouble, a beastly minion that can teleport and deal area-of-effect damage. Her Incarnate style creates damaging explosions and buffs Vex. When choosing a character, consider whether you prefer direct gunplay, close-range attacks or abilities that provide additional support.

One early mission follows Rafa as he helps the Outbounders, a group targeted by the Timekeeper’s forces. Grappling an explosive barrel and hurling it at an enemy is one way to use the environment, while a vehicle called the Digirunner opens up more options for travelling across the Fadefields.

Boss fights reward mobility and timing

A later mission takes Rafa through an enemy stronghold to confront Horace. The encounter combines groups of enemies with a boss fight, making movement and careful use of the Repkit important. In solo play, Second Wind offers a chance to get back up by taking out an enemy after being downed.

Vex’s preview mission focuses on the Fadefields Primordial Vault, a challenging dungeon with platforming sections and successive enemy waves. Her summoned creatures can draw attention away from her, creating room to reposition or deal damage. The final opponent, Primordial Guardian Inceptus, has a whip-like tail, claw attacks and vulnerable areas that players can expose with the grappling hook.

During the fight, Inceptus climbs onto the ceiling and floods the arena with poisonous liquid. Grappling between the mushroom-like formations on the ceiling helps players avoid the hazard and reach the boss’s exposed weak points. In encounters like this, watching attack patterns and saving mobility options for dangerous phases can be more effective than relying on gunfire alone.

Co-op adds another layer to the action

Borderlands 4 supports two-player cooperative play, and the preview’s boss encounter showed how a second player can change the pace of a fight. While one player draws the boss’s attention, the other can attack or reposition. This can make a demanding encounter feel more manageable, especially when players coordinate their abilities.

The experience also works in solo play, but cooperative sessions remain a natural fit for the series’ combat and loot systems. Before taking on a difficult boss with friends, it can help to agree on who will draw enemy attention and who will focus on damage or support.

What the preview suggests about Borderlands 4

Borderlands 4 combines familiar looter-shooter combat with a more connected world, expanded traversal and new approaches to character abilities and equipment. The preview indicates that its changes are focused on making exploration and encounters more dynamic while preserving the series’ humor, weapon variety and chaotic battles.

The game is set to arrive on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S and PC on September 12, with a Switch 2 release planned for a later date. For fans of cooperative action, character builds and searching for new gear, Borderlands 4’s new movement tools and Vault Hunters are the key features to watch.
