Nintendo Switch Sports Resort revisits Wuhu Island with new ways to explore and a collection of motion-controlled sports. The previewed experience combines relaxed sightseeing with quick multiplayer games, offering options for both solo play and gatherings. Its appeal is less about recreating the cultural moment of the original Wii Sports and more about providing an accessible sports collection for casual play.

Nintendo Switch Sports Resort brings Wuhu Island back
Wii Sports became a defining game for the Wii when it launched in 2006, introducing motion controls to a wide audience through activities such as bowling and tennis. Wii Sports Resort followed three years later and showcased Wii MotionPlus. Nintendo Switch Sports arrived in 2022, renewing interest in the series on a newer console. This new Resort entry builds on that history by returning to the island best known from Wii Sports Resort.
Wuhu Island can be explored on land, in the air and on the water. The three available ways to travel are Skateboard, Prop Plane and Power Cruiser. Each uses Joy-Con motion controls, so players can move around the island without navigating through a traditional menu or map alone.

Three ways to explore
Skateboarding uses one Joy-Con in Mouse Mode. Players mimic a kick-push motion to move, tilt the controller to steer and lift it from a surface to jump or perform tricks. For a more comfortable session, make sure there is enough space to move the controller safely.
The Prop Plane is controlled by holding a Joy-Con like a paper airplane. Tilting and using the controller’s gyroscope affect the plane’s direction and speed. Power Cruising uses two Joy-Cons held like handlebars; tilting steers the craft, while twisting the controllers revs the engine.
Exploring also leads players to photo spots that share details about Wuhu Island’s history, along with collectibles. These items award points that can be used to customize a Mii or avatar, giving sightseeing a practical reward as well as a change of pace from the sports.
Sports and minigames for quick matches
The island activities add variety, but the individual sports remain central to the experience. Thumb Wrestling is a playful minigame in which players hold a Joy-Con upright and try to pin an opponent’s thumb. The opponent can shake their controller to break free.
Archery includes a special mode for four players using two upright Joy-Cons. Everyone aims at different parts of the same target, so accuracy matters: hitting another player’s section awards points to that opponent. This format can suit a group looking for a short, competitive round.

Boxing involves defending against attacks and choosing when to strike. In Table Tennis, players use a Joy-Con like a paddle and try to force an opponent into a mistake or take advantage of a weak return. Bowling returns as well. Compared with the Wii Sports version, its controls place more emphasis on spin and aim than on release timing.
The sports played in the preview generally controlled well, although Boxing’s motion controls could struggle when a punch was performed with the expected motion. Bowling may also feel different to returning players who preferred relying on release timing in the earlier game. Trying each activity briefly before settling on a favorite can help players adjust to the control style.
Island Crown and special variants
Several formats are available, including special versions such as bowling with a hundred pins. Island Crown is a progression mode in which players compete against 20 CPU characters across nine sports. The goal is to climb the rankings and challenge that sport’s Island Legend boss. Its sequence of matches could offer a longer-term goal alongside the shorter minigames.

What to expect from Nintendo Switch Sports Resort
Nintendo Switch Sports Resort pairs accessible sports with an explorable island, collectibles and multiplayer-friendly activities. The preview suggests that its bite-sized games can work for solo sessions or a party, while Island Crown and the island exploration provide reasons to keep playing beyond individual matches.
The game is listed as arriving on Switch 2 on October 22. For players deciding whether it suits their group, the main considerations are its motion-control approach, the mix of casual sports and the return of Wuhu Island. Nintendo Switch Sports Resort looks set to offer a lighthearted sports experience rather than a highly realistic simulation.
