The Reforged Labs shutdown marks the end of a three-year effort to build generative AI tools for mobile game marketing. The company served major studios, but its leadership said the market was too limited to support the larger business they had set out to create, while rapid advances in AI changed the competitive landscape.

Why the Reforged Labs shutdown happened
Founded in 2023, Reforged Labs developed technology for creative strategy and performance marketing in mobile gaming. Its platform was designed for studios investing heavily in advertising, and its clients included Supercell, King, Ubisoft, Playtika, and Scopely.
The company had a team of 17 employees working across Vietnam and the United States. Co-founder and CEO Robert Huynh said some of its strongest customers signed contracts worth six figures. However, there were not enough studios operating at that scale to make the market large enough for the company’s ambitions.
Reforged Labs also explored opportunities outside gaming, but Huynh said those efforts did not produce a strong enough path to growth. For companies assessing specialist software, this illustrates why customer interest and large contracts need to be considered alongside the total number of potential buyers.
How advances in AI affected the company
Huynh said AI models had improved significantly in the months before the closure. Reforged Labs had to rebuild major parts of its product around the newer models, and he believed sophisticated gaming teams would increasingly be able to create some comparable capabilities themselves.
That shift narrowed the distinction between a dedicated product and tools customers could develop using increasingly capable models. It does not mean every studio will choose to build its own software; teams still need to weigh development effort, workflow fit, and ongoing maintenance when deciding between internal tools and external platforms.
Huynh said the company could have continued as a smaller business because it had real revenue. Instead, he chose to close it rather than gradually reduce its scale. His explanation points to two separate pressures: a limited customer base and a changing product landscape.
Funding and investors
In 2024, Reforged Labs raised $3.9 million in a seed round led by DCM. Other contributors included Y Combinator, Epakon Capital, Goodwater Capital, Phoenix Fund, and Asymmetry Ventures.
Angel investors included Niantic, Pocket Gems, King co-founder and former CFO Sebastian Knutsson, and founders and executives of Sky Mavis. The funding and customer roster show that the company attracted backing and worked with established industry names, but neither alone was enough to overcome the challenges Huynh described.
What the Reforged Labs shutdown means for gaming teams
For mobile game studios considering AI marketing tools, the company’s closure is a reminder to evaluate whether a product solves a recurring need across enough teams—not only whether it performs well for a few large customers. Buyers can also consider how quickly a tool can adapt as underlying AI models change and whether its value depends on capabilities that may become easier to reproduce.
Ultimately, the Reforged Labs shutdown reflects a combination of a narrow market and fast-moving technology. The company had paying customers and substantial investors, but its leadership concluded that the opportunity was not developing into the business they had planned to build.
