Analyst: AI-focused M&A deals are “weakening” the games investment landscape

The games investment landscape is becoming more selective as major mergers and acquisitions increasingly focus on artificial intelligence (AI). S&P Global Market Intelligence says investors remain cautious about gaming’s revenue growth prospects and compressed margins, while capital is flowing toward businesses with recurring engagement, platform advantages, or alternative monetization.

AI-focused M&A is reshaping the games investment landscape

According to S&P Global Market Intelligence analyst Neil Barbour, the largest M&A transactions in the second quarter were heavily concentrated in AI. That concentration has drawn interest away from other sectors, including software, and added pressure to an already challenging funding environment for games companies.

The quarter saw 23 M&A transactions with a combined gross transaction value of $1.15 billion. The total value was flat year over year, but the number of transactions fell 85% compared with the first quarter. Barbour cautioned that the market is operating at such a low level that one or two missing deals—even transactions worth around $100 million—can substantially affect the reported change.

For readers tracking market activity, the deal count and total value tell different parts of the story: a flat value alongside fewer transactions can indicate that investment is concentrated in a smaller number of large deals.

Notable gaming deals in the second quarter

  • Shengsong Investment made a $596.4 million minority investment in Wemade.
  • DoubleUGames offered $183.7 million to increase its stake in social casino operator DoubleDown Interactive.
  • Integrated Media Company acquired independent publisher PlayStack for $168.1 million.

A separate chart note identifies a Q3 2025 spike as the result of Electronic Arts’ $55 billion acquisition. That event provides context for how a single exceptionally large transaction can shift quarterly M&A figures.

Private funding rises while deal numbers fall

Private financing recorded 36 rounds totaling $519.7 million in Q2. Total funding was up 89.1% year over year, even as the number of rounds declined 29.4%. This contrast suggests that more money was raised overall despite fewer financing events.

The largest round was Veroplay’s $215.6 million investment connected to its acquisition of play-to-earn platform JustPlay. Mobile games company Grand Games raised $70 million to expand its titles.

Q2’s largest funding round was Veroplay’s $215.6 million investment associated with its acquisition of JustPlay.

What selective investment means for game developers

Barbour says investor and acquirer interest has not disappeared, but funding is increasingly selective. He notes that investors see limited revenue growth opportunities and compressed margins in gaming, which can make them more cautious about committing capital.

The shift toward AI, live services, mobile, platform ecosystems, and play-to-earn models may make it harder for traditional PC and console teams to secure independent financing or find buyers. This is particularly challenging amid layoffs and divestitures. Development budgets, user acquisition costs, and hardware prices also continue to put pressure on the economics of creating new games.

For studios seeking investment, a practical takeaway is to clearly explain their revenue model, audience strategy, and ability to sustain engagement. These factors do not guarantee funding, but they speak directly to the business considerations investors are prioritizing.

Outlook for the games investment landscape

The latest figures point to a market where capital is still available, but fewer companies are attracting it and AI-focused deals are competing for attention. The games investment landscape will remain difficult for many developers if investor concerns about growth and margins persist, particularly for teams building traditional PC and console titles.
