Ares Interactive’s “AI-enabled development, marketing, and live-ops” secures $70m in Series A Funding

Ares Interactive funding has brought the game company $70 million in a Series A round led by General Catalyst. The investment is intended to help the studio develop a cross-platform, free-to-play games business and build franchises designed to attract and retain players over time.

Ares Interactive funding and the company’s plans

Ares describes the financing as one of the largest early-stage investments in a game company in recent years. The company says the capital will support its aim to create a next-generation, cross-platform, free-to-play (F2P) games company.

For players, cross-platform games can make it possible to access a title across different devices, while F2P games typically allow people to start playing without purchasing the game upfront. A sustainable approach to this model often depends on ongoing content and attention to player feedback. Ares has identified those areas as part of its broader development strategy.

How AI fits into Ares Interactive’s operations

Ares is led by a team based in San Francisco and Berlin, with support from an advisory board. The company says it uses AI-supported workflows across game development, marketing, and live operations, or live-ops.

According to Ares, these workflows are intended to help teams test and refine ideas more quickly, produce content efficiently, and respond to player feedback in real time. In practice, live-ops refers to the work involved in supporting a game after launch, such as maintaining its ongoing experience and responding to how players use it. The company has not provided specific details about the tools or processes behind its AI-supported approach.

Games in development and already released

Ares is working on Baseball Hits 26, which the company describes as a baseball game created for baseball fans and featuring officially licensed professional baseball players. Its development combines a defined sports audience with licensed player content.

The company has also released Heroes vs Hordes, a roguelike role-playing game that has recorded more than 13 million installs. That figure indicates the title’s accumulated installations; it does not, by itself, establish the number of active players.

When discussing the funding, Ares Interactive president Mike DeLaet said the round supports the company’s vision, operating approach, and team. He also highlighted the leadership group’s experience developing, scaling, and operating successful free-to-play games, and said the investment would allow the company to grow carefully and pursue games it wants to make for the long term.

What the Series A means for Ares Interactive

The $70 million round gives Ares additional resources for its stated plans, including work on new games and the systems needed to support them. The company’s progress will depend on how its titles perform and how effectively it can turn player feedback into ongoing improvements.

For readers following Ares Interactive funding, the key points are the size and lead investor of the Series A, the company’s focus on AI-supported development and live-ops, and its current projects. Ares has announced its plans, but the financing alone does not guarantee that any game will become a hit.
