Atari and Twin Galaxies announce Atari World Championships

The Atari World Championships will combine online competition with a live, in-person final. Atari and Twin Galaxies have announced an open tournament featuring five Atari titles, followed by the Grand Finals. The announcement outlines the competition’s format and North America pilot, but does not name the games or provide dates and venue details.

How the Atari World Championships will work

The competition begins with an open online tournament. Players will compete across five Atari games, with the event concluding in a live Grand Finals. This structure gives participants an online starting point before the championship reaches its in-person stage.

Twin Galaxies will oversee the online tournament using its Submission and Adjudication Process, known as TGSAP. The process is intended to manage submissions and adjudication, which are important parts of record-based competitive gaming. Players interested in taking part should look for official updates on entry requirements, game selection, scoring rules and tournament dates, as those details are not included in the announcement.

North America pilot and event details

The first version of the competition is planned as a North America pilot. Twin Galaxies will also recruit select brand partners for this pilot. No specific partners, tournament schedule, Grand Finals location or prize information is provided in the available details.

Because the five featured titles have not been identified, players should avoid assuming that a particular Atari game will be included. The final game list and competition rules will determine what participants need to practise and how scores are submitted.

What Atari and Twin Galaxies say

Atari CEO Wade Rosen said the company has a history spanning more than fifty years, which fans continue to celebrate and explore. He said Atari looks forward to working with Twin Galaxies to bring existing fans together and welcome new people into its community.

Twin Galaxies senior executive Zachary Rozga described the project as a way to bring the retro spirit and arcade energy of competitive gaming to a contemporary audience. He said the championship model is intended to give different kinds of gamers an opportunity to reach the leaderboard, receive recognition and share their stories.

Atari’s film adaptation agreement

Atari has also signed an agreement with Universal Pictures to adapt ten of its intellectual properties into feature films. The titles named are Asteroids, Adventure, Berzerk, Breakout, Centipede, Crystal Castles, Millipede, Missile Command, Pong and Yars’ Revenge. This film agreement is separate from the tournament, but it reflects the broader range of Atari properties featured in the announcement.

What to know about the Atari World Championships

The Atari World Championships are planned as an open online competition across five Atari games, with a live Grand Finals to follow. Twin Galaxies will use TGSAP to manage the online tournament, and the initial pilot is aimed at North America. For prospective competitors, the most useful next step is to check for confirmed game titles, registration information and event rules before making plans.
