US video game sales declined in June 2026, with estimated total spending falling from $5.7 billion in June 2025 to $4.5 billion. Hardware revenue saw the steepest year-over-year drop, even as Xbox Series spending more than doubled. The figures, reported by Circana, also show a varied performance across games, consoles, and accessories.

US video game sales and hardware spending
Total video game spending in the United States was down by about one-fifth compared with June 2025. Revenue declined across all three tracked segments: hardware fell 62%, software was down 12%, and accessories decreased 21%.
Hardware spending dropped from $1 billion in June 2025 to $383 million in June 2026. The comparison follows the Switch 2’s launch in June 2025, when Nintendo hardware spending was unusually high. Nintendo hardware spending in June 2026 was 79% below its total during that launch month.
Console results differed by platform. PlayStation 5 spending declined 19% year over year, while Xbox Series spending more than doubled. These changes are spending comparisons; they do not, on their own, show how many consoles were sold.
For broader context, year-to-date sales across hardware and software were close to the previous year’s level, down around 1%. A single month can be affected by major launches and timing, so the year-to-date figure offers a wider view of the market.

What the June figures show
The June results point to a sharp year-over-year contraction in hardware spending, alongside a much smaller decline in software revenue. The Switch 2 launch comparison helps explain why Nintendo’s year-over-year figure fell so substantially, while Xbox Series spending moved in the opposite direction. Overall, US video game sales were lower for the month, but year-to-date hardware and software spending remained broadly close to the previous year.
