Discord age verification is set to roll out globally from March, but the company has clarified that most adults will not need to complete a separate check. Discord says it can infer many users’ ages from account information, while accounts that cannot be confirmed as belonging to adults will receive a teen-appropriate experience.

Updated February 11, 2026: Discord revised its original announcement after users raised concerns. The company says age may be inferred from account tenure, device and activity data, and aggregated, high-level patterns across Discord communities. It says private messages and message content will not be used for this process.
How Discord age verification will work
For users whose age cannot be established through account information, Discord says age assurance may involve a video selfie for facial age estimation or submitting verification information to a vendor partner. The company states that video selfies used for age estimation remain on the user’s device. It also says identity documents submitted to its partners are deleted quickly, in most cases immediately after age confirmation.
These details are worth reviewing before completing a check. Users should follow the instructions shown in Discord’s official verification flow and avoid sending identity documents through unofficial messages or links.
What happens if an account is not confirmed as an adult?
Accounts that have not been successfully age-verified may face restrictions on adult features and some safety settings. Discord has outlined the following changes:
- Sensitive content: Users must be confirmed as adults to unblur sensitive content or turn off the relevant filter.
- Age-restricted spaces: Access to age-gated channels, servers, and app commands will be limited to users confirmed as adults.
- Message requests: Direct messages from people a user may not know will go to a separate inbox by default. Changing this setting will be limited to adult-confirmed users.
- Friend requests: Users will see warning prompts for requests from people they may not know.
- Stage speaking: Only users confirmed as adults will be able to speak on stage in servers.
If a feature becomes unavailable, check the account’s age-assurance status and the platform’s current instructions. The exact experience may depend on whether Discord can determine an age from account information or requires an additional check.
Privacy concerns and the rollout
Discord previously introduced similar restrictions for users in the UK and Australia following legislation in those regions. Age checks have attracted scrutiny over both accuracy and data security. In an earlier incident involving one of Discord’s verification partners, personal information and identification documents belonging to 70,000 users were reportedly exposed after the partner was hacked. Users have also found ways to bypass age checks, including attempts using a photo mode in the game Death Stranding.
Discord’s global head of product policy, Savannah Badalich, acknowledged that some users may try to get around the checks and said the company would work to identify and address weaknesses. For users, the practical takeaway is to use only the official verification process and to review the platform’s privacy information before submitting anything.
Why the policy matters
Discord is widely used for communication and community-building in the games industry, including by independent developers and publishers promoting upcoming releases. The company says it has more than 200 million registered users and is preparing for a public listing. A policy change affecting age-restricted spaces and messaging can therefore influence how communities manage access and communicate with members.
What to know about Discord age verification
Discord age verification is scheduled to begin in March, but the company’s clarification means most adults may not have to submit a separate age check. Accounts that cannot be confirmed as adult accounts may have limited access to sensitive content, age-restricted areas, and certain settings. Check Discord’s official guidance for the latest requirements, and use only its approved verification flow if additional confirmation is requested.
