Former Embracer CEO says Fellowship Entertainment spin-off is the “most effective long-term solution”

Embracer Group chairman and former CEO Lars Wingefors has described the planned Fellowship Entertainment spin-off as the most effective long-term option for the business. In an open letter to shareholders, he said a separate company could give its leadership more room to develop the group’s game franchises and strengthen their long-term commercial potential.

Why Embracer plans the Fellowship Entertainment spin-off

Fellowship Entertainment is expected to manage a portfolio of intellectual properties that includes Kingdom Come: Deliverance, Tomb Raider, and The Lord of the Rings. Embracer, meanwhile, intends to concentrate on a leaner operating structure, closer cost management, and more disciplined investment decisions.

Wingefors’ central argument is that a dedicated management team could better coordinate the franchises, their communities, and the development studios working on them. He believes the properties are undervalued and that an independent business structure would make it easier to pursue their potential. These are his expectations, rather than guaranteed financial outcomes.

He also pointed to Asmodee and Coffee Stain, which became separate businesses in April 2024, as precedents. According to Wingefors, Fellowship could benefit from operating independently in a similar way.

Timing, costs, and the planned separation

The separation is planned for 2027. Wingefors said Embracer does not expect the move to increase overall corporate costs, and that the intention is to keep overheads efficient across both resulting groups. He also cited Fellowship’s stronger product pipeline from 2027 onward as a reason the timing appears appropriate to the company.

For readers following the business change, the key distinction is between the announcement and the completed separation: the plan is not described as an immediate transfer. The 2027 target and any subsequent updates are important when assessing which company will oversee the portfolio in the future.

Restructuring and the wider Embracer context

The proposed spin-off follows a difficult period for Embracer. After a partnership worth a reported $2 billion fell apart in 2023, the company undertook a nine-month restructuring program. The partnership was reportedly with Saudi Arabia’s Savvy Games Group.

More than 1,400 employees were affected by layoffs. The restructuring also led to the closure of Volition Games, Free Radical Design, Campfire Cabal, and Piranha Bytes. Embracer sold Saber Interactive, Gearbox, Arc Games, and Cryptic Studios. More recently, Eidos-Montreal eliminated 124 positions, and studio head David Anfossi departed.

Wingefors said the company had tried to preserve as many jobs as possible while working toward profitable operations. He also described the industry as adjusting to a post-pandemic environment and said Embracer was moving beyond a major cycle of productions that began before or during the pandemic.

What the Fellowship Entertainment spin-off could mean

Wingefors presents the separation as a way to give Fellowship’s franchises and teams clearer management focus, while allowing Embracer to pursue a more streamlined structure. Whether that approach delivers the profitability and growth he anticipates will depend on execution and future business performance.

For now, the main points to watch are the planned 2027 separation, the management and operating arrangements for the listed franchises, and any further updates from Embracer. The Fellowship Entertainment spin-off remains a proposed long-term restructuring step, not proof that the anticipated results have already been achieved.
