Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 developers receive French honors

The Ministry of Culture presented the awards to 28 members of the development team at a ceremony held recently. The Order of Arts and Letters, known in French as the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, recognizes contributions to the arts and culture.

Sandfall Interactive credited the whole team and the players who helped make the game a success. The studio also said it hoped its path would encourage aspiring creators to develop and share their own work. The recognition therefore reflects both the team’s collective effort and the response from the game’s audience.

Why France recognized the game

French culture minister Rachida Dati described the award as a way to celebrate a successful collective effort. She said the game had made a notable impact, drawing support from both players and critics and becoming an important moment for French video games.

Dati also pointed to the wider significance of the achievement. In her remarks, she framed video games as more than entertainment: they are a cultural practice, an industry, a means of international influence and an art form. She added that the medium now has a place in cultural life across age groups and social backgrounds.

Her comments come as the video game industry faces a difficult period. The success of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, she said, could help renew confidence and momentum across the sector. For readers, the award is a reminder that games can receive recognition not only for commercial or critical success, but also for their cultural contribution.

A distinction with a history

The Order of Arts and Letters was established in the 1950s and is awarded to around 200 people each year. Video game creators have received the honor before. In 2006, distinctions went to Rayman creator Michel Ancel, Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto and Alone in the Dark developer Frédérick Raynal. The Legend of Zelda producer Eiji Aonuma was also made a knight in 2023.

What the award means for Clair Obscur: Expedition 33

Since its launch in April 2025, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has collected awards and recognition across the games industry. It also became the most awarded title in The Game Awards history. The knighthoods add a national cultural honor to that record and recognize the work of 28 people involved in bringing the game to players.

For the French games sector, the recognition highlights how a locally developed title can reach a broad audience and contribute to the country’s cultural profile. The honor for the Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 team also reinforces the game’s significance as a collaborative creative achievement.
