Geoff Keighley clarifies how trailers are selected for Gamescom Opening Night Live

Gamescom Opening Night Live trailers can appear through editorial selection or paid placements, according to host Geoff Keighley. In a press pre-briefing ahead of the showcase, Keighley and Gamescom representatives explained how those routes differ and what may help a game earn editorial attention.

How Gamescom Opening Night Live trailers are selected

Keighley said the program includes both paid space and games chosen for editorial reasons. The paid option works in a similar way to securing exhibition space at Gamescom: participating companies can arrange a place within the show. However, he stressed that not every trailer is an advertisement, and that the editorial team also chooses titles it wants to feature.

Independent games are part of that editorial mix. Keighley said the show includes titles made by small teams, including teams of three or four people, when the organizers believe in the game and its developers. He also described selection as a group decision, rather than a process determined by him alone.

For viewers, this means that a trailer’s appearance does not automatically indicate it was bought as an advertisement. Paid placements and editorial selections can both feature in a marketing-focused event, so the distinction depends on how a particular slot was secured.

What can make a game an editorial pick?

Keighley said the scale and significance of the news or announcement are important considerations. A new reveal or a substantial update may offer the kind of surprise that audiences expect from a showcase. By contrast, a trailer for a game already available or due to launch within a few weeks may serve more directly as promotion.

That distinction is not a strict rule about which games can appear. The show may include both major announcements and reminders about upcoming releases. For developers, the practical takeaway is that the news being presented matters alongside the game itself; editorial consideration is not described as a simple matter of studio size.

How Gamescom partners fit into the showcase

Keighley said that companies featured in Opening Night Live are generally Gamescom partners in some form, such as exhibitors at the event. The digital showcase can therefore extend the reach of a company’s physical presence beyond its booth.

Felix Falk, managing director of the German Games Industry Association, said most of the organization’s digital content is not paid advertising and is free for its partners. He characterized the broadcasts as a hybrid way to reach people around the world, beyond the more than 350,000 attendees expected on site. Falk added that generating revenue directly from the digital shows is not the main priority; giving Gamescom partners a wider audience is more important.

Games confirmed for Opening Night Live

Keighley confirmed that Gears of War E-Day, Final Fantasy 7: Revelation, Ananta, and Metro 2039 are among the titles planned for the show. The program will also include more details about the new expansion for The Witcher 3.

Gamescom 2026 and other event news

Gamescom director Tim Endres of Koelnmesse said Games Done Quick (GDQ) will attend Gamescom for the first time this year and raise money for the Gaming for Democracy initiative. Endres described the event as a platform for supporting a good cause.

Gamescom 2026 is expected to be the event’s biggest edition so far, with more than 1,600 exhibitors and nearly 50 pavilions representing 40 countries. For audiences deciding which announcements to follow, the showcase combines new reveals, updates, and promotional trailers; checking the event program can help clarify what is scheduled as the date approaches.

What to know about Gamescom Opening Night Live trailers

Gamescom Opening Night Live trailers may be paid placements or editorial selections, and Keighley said the latter are chosen by a group based partly on the scale of the news. The showcase also gives Gamescom partners a digital way to reach audiences worldwide, while making room for independent games as well as major releases.
