W4 Games funding has secured the Godot Engine services company $18 million in a Series B round led by Tencent, alongside a strategic agreement focused on growing its technology and the Godot ecosystem in Asia. The investment will help W4 expand its team and support developers and businesses using the open-source game engine.

W4 Games funding and the Tencent agreement

The latest round brings W4 Games’ total funding to $33 million. In addition to Tencent, investors in the Series B include OSS Capital, LUX, Naval Ravikant and Tobias Lütke’s family office.

Founded in 2022 by members of the Godot Engine’s founding team, W4 Games provides commercial services for developers working with the engine, including console porting. The agreement with Tencent is intended to support the development and adoption of W4’s technology across Asia. W4 chose to work with Tencent in part because of the company’s established regional ecosystem and reach.

For developers assessing Godot for a project, the distinction is useful: Godot is the open-source engine, while W4 offers commercial services that can help with specific production and deployment needs. Teams should evaluate the support required for their platforms and project scope before choosing an engine or service provider.

Godot adoption and demand from larger studios

Godot’s use in games has grown in recent years. W4 cites SteamDB data indicating that the number of games on Steam made with Godot increased by more than 50% in 2024 and 2025. A total of 1,262 Godot-powered titles had been released on Steam so far in 2026.

W4 Games co-CEO Nicola Farronato says the company is preparing to meet growing demand from enterprise customers and larger projects. Potential areas of use include games, extended reality (XR), multiplayer experiences and other specialised applications. Godot creator and W4 founder Juan Linietsky described the partnership as a way to build on the engine’s momentum and strengthen its position with companies developing new games.

W4 Games plans to expand its international team

W4 says part of the investment will fund international hiring. The company currently has around 30 employees working remotely across approximately 20 cities, and plans to increase its headcount by 50%. Farronato said W4 intends to hire 10 to 15 full-time employees over the next 12 months, including people in Asia.

The company says it wants to grow in line with revenue and pursue a multi-year market strategy. For readers following the expansion, the planned hires and regional partnerships are practical indicators of how W4 intends to build its support capacity rather than relying on funding alone.

China and Japan are established Godot markets in Asia

Farronato identifies China and Japan as the region’s most mature markets for Godot and W4. He says these countries rank behind the United States among markets for active Godot users, and that Godot already has localisation covering the region.

W4 has existing relationships in both markets. These include work with Chinese independent publisher Indieark and Japanese company eSol on industrial and enterprise environments using Godot. The Tencent agreement adds a strategic partner as W4 seeks to expand its activities across Asia.

W4 Games’ long-term ambitions

W4’s stated goal is to become one of the three leading companies in its sector globally. Farronato also says the company wants Godot to become the largest general-purpose game engine by market share. He acknowledges that Godot still has ground to make up against Unity, and describes ongoing product improvements and broader adoption as central to that ambition.

Overall, W4 Games funding combines capital with a regional partnership and planned hiring. For developers, the key takeaway is that W4 is increasing its capacity to serve larger and more specialised Godot projects, while aiming to strengthen the engine’s presence in Asia and globally.
