Grim Fiction Inspired By Darker Realities

Metro 2039 is the next mainline instalment in 4A Games’ post-apocalyptic shooter series, and its reveal points to a story shaped by both the franchise’s bleak setting and the developers’ experiences of war. The game follows a solitary soldier known as The Stranger as he returns to the underground tunnels that humanity calls home.

Metro 2039 returns to a world in ruins

The Metro games draw inspiration from Dmitry Glukhovsky’s novels. In this world, nuclear war has devastated Moscow and much of the planet. Radiation makes the surface dangerous, while mutated creatures roam above ground. Many survivors have taken refuge in the city’s subway tunnels, where communities struggle to endure.

The reveal cinematic sets an unsettling tone. A masked soldier walks through a shadowy forest while a loudspeaker promises clean air and a better future. Children’s drawings lie scattered across the ground, and a young girl appears as the soldier picks one up. Soon, he is trapped among chains that pull him down as the girl watches.

The scene shifts to a train where soldiers are loading chained children into the cars. The protagonist tries to follow, but a chain around his ankle brings him down. He wakes in a subway tunnel, where an older woman challenges his belief that the situation is all about him. As Moscow burns in the distance, the cinematic shows brainwashed children repeating a slogan about destroying the enemy. When the Dark Ones—mutated creatures familiar from earlier games—appear, the soldier opens fire and discovers that he has hit one of the children he meant to protect.

The Stranger’s return to the Metro

4A Games describes the project as a handcrafted, single-player experience focused on its story. Its protagonist, The Stranger, is a reclusive soldier troubled by violent nightmares. The studio has confirmed that he will be fully voiced. His journey takes him back to the Metro, a place he had sworn never to revisit. Why he made that promise, and what forces him to break it, have not yet been revealed.

For players catching up on the series, the central setting is important: the tunnels are not merely a route between locations, but the home and refuge of much of the remaining population. The Stranger’s return therefore brings him back into a society shaped by scarcity, danger and difficult choices.

Real-world conflict shapes the story’s themes

Earlier Metro games examined how people behave before and after societal collapse, including the sacrifices they make to survive. The series has also served as an anti-war reflection on the consequences of human choices. According to executive producer Jon Bloch, the team’s plans changed in 2020 and changed more substantially in 2022.

Creative director Andriy Mls Shevchenko said Russia’s war against Ukraine shifted the game’s thematic focus toward “the cost of silence, the horrors of tyranny, the price of freedom.” The developers also say that choice and consequence will remain central to the experience. These themes reflect the studio’s circumstances, but 4A Games has stressed that the project remains a Metro story rather than an attempt to turn real suffering into entertainment.

The team has described practical hardships during the conflict, including using battery generators for electricity and taking shelter from rocket and drone attacks. The game returns to the underground tunnels featured in earlier entries. It is not yet clear whether exploration will resemble the more open areas of Metro Exodus.

Survival gameplay and familiar Metro details

A short gameplay segment shows The Stranger moving through a bomb-damaged laundromat. Snow has drifted inside through a breach in the wall, covering human and creature remains. Familiar survival details return: the player can wipe grime from a protective visor, check a wristwatch for remaining oxygen and listen to a radiation detector.

Large, mole-like mutants interrupt the exploration. The Stranger runs down an escalator and fires once, but the limited ammunition barely slows the creature. A close-quarters struggle follows: he fights off its attack, creates an opening with a kick and kills it with his knife. He then reaches an underground shelter, where soldiers pull him inside just before the other mutants can reach him.

The sequence suggests that ammunition management and dangerous encounters will remain important. When exploring hazardous areas, players should pay attention to survival indicators such as oxygen and radiation warnings rather than treating the environment as safe between fights.

What to expect from Metro 2039

The reveal presents a grim story about survival, control and the cost of remaining silent, alongside tense encounters and familiar post-apocalyptic details. The Stranger’s past, the reason for his return and the shape of the wider journey remain unanswered. Metro 2039 is set to take the series back into its tunnels, with a narrative direction informed by the real hardships faced by its Ukrainian development team.
