GTA 6 extended look reaches 31.1m views on Netflix in four days, making it the most-viewed title last week

The GTA 6 extended look attracted 31.1 million views on Netflix in four days, making the 30-minute preview the platform’s most-viewed title during the measured week. Its ranking highlights the scale of interest in Grand Theft Auto 6, while Netflix’s viewing metric differs from the view counter used by YouTube.

GTA 6 extended look leads Netflix’s weekly rankings

The preview premiered on Thursday, August 27, and its Netflix viewing was tracked through Sunday, August 30, the end of the service’s weekly Top 10 reporting window. It appeared in Netflix’s English-language films category and ranked first in 87 of the 93 countries tracked.

That placed it ahead of the crime thriller The Whisper Man, starring Robert De Niro and Adam Scott. For readers comparing titles, it is useful to note that the reported ranking refers to Netflix’s English-language film list and its specific weekly measurement period.

Why Netflix and YouTube view counts differ

Netflix reported 31.1 million views for the preview, but that figure is not a simple count of every time playback began. Netflix calculates a title’s views by dividing its total hours watched by its runtime. As a result, the number is a viewing measure based on watch time and the program’s length.

YouTube uses a different approach: a view is counted when a video starts playing. The preview was exclusive to Netflix for six hours before it became available on YouTube. Since then, the video on Rockstar Games’ channel has reached 17 million views.

Because the services use different methods, their totals should not be treated as directly equivalent. The figures offer a useful indication of reach on each platform, but they do not measure viewership in exactly the same way.

Mobile viewing and web traffic also increased

Sensor Tower data showed that Netflix’s US mobile viewership rose by 35% hour over hour during the extended preview. The number of mobile users was also 50% higher than the average for the same period across the previous 12 weeks.

Web traffic climbed by 125%, temporarily causing Netflix to crash. These figures point to a sharp short-term increase in activity around the premiere. When interpreting them, keep in mind that the reported comparisons relate to US mobile usage and the stated historical comparison period.

What the preview means for GTA 6’s launch

Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick previously described the Netflix premiere as “one of the hors d’oeuvres” in the game’s marketing campaign. Grand Theft Auto 6 is scheduled to launch on November 19 for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.

Overall, the GTA 6 extended look combined a strong Netflix ranking with substantial platform activity. The 31.1 million figure reflects Netflix’s runtime-based view calculation, while YouTube’s 17 million uses a separate playback-based measure—an important distinction when comparing the two totals.
