GTA 6 Netflix preview causes PlayStation and Xbox hardware sales to jump in the UK

The GTA 6 Netflix preview coincided with a sharp rise in PlayStation and Xbox hardware sales in the UK. PS5 sales climbed 33%, while Xbox Series X|S sales increased 34%, according to Nielsen IQ data. The figures point to a burst of interest around the reveal, although they do not, by themselves, show how much of the increase was caused by the preview.

GTA 6 Netflix preview and UK console sales

Retailers reportedly had limited availability of PS5 Pro consoles, with Argos and Smyths Toys showing only standard PS5 models. Availability can vary between stores and over time, so shoppers comparing consoles should check current stock and prices rather than assume that a short-term shortage is nationwide or permanent.

The sales jump comes amid a weaker year-on-year market. UK console hardware sales were down 14.4% compared with the same period a year earlier, largely reflecting a 32% decline in PS5 sales. Xbox Series X|S sales, by contrast, were up 3.1% year on year. These longer-term comparisons provide a different picture from the week-on-week rises reported after the preview.

What the sales increase could mean

Newzoo analyst Ronan Patrick expects the approaching releases of GTA 6 in November and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 in October to contribute to a larger console install base. However, he does not anticipate an exceptionally large increase. A rise in weekly sales can indicate renewed interest without necessarily translating into a lasting shift in the overall number of active consoles.

Cost may also affect how many people decide to upgrade. Patrick noted that, after adjusting for inflation, the PS5 costs 67% more than it did at launch, while Xbox is twice as expensive. For buyers, it is useful to compare the total cost of a console, games and any required subscriptions, rather than focusing only on the initial hardware price.

Patrick also pointed out that players often spend much of their time with older games. He compared the situation with the 2020–2021 GPU shortage, when spending shifted toward software without pushing overall engagement or revenue off course. In other words, a hardware sales spike does not necessarily mean players will stop buying or playing existing titles.

Netflix viewing figures for the GTA 6 preview

The extended preview was Netflix’s most-viewed title of the week, drawing 31.1 million views in four days. Its YouTube version received 22 million views in one week. Sensor Tower data also showed that Netflix’s US mobile viewership rose 35% hour over hour during the premiere.

These audience figures show that the preview attracted substantial attention across streaming and video platforms. They should be considered alongside console sales data, not as a direct measure of game purchases or future hardware demand.

What to take away

The GTA 6 Netflix preview was followed by notable short-term increases in UK PS5 and Xbox Series X|S sales, but the wider market remains mixed: year-on-year hardware sales were lower overall, and console prices may influence upgrade decisions. Readers considering a purchase can use the figures as a snapshot of interest, while checking current prices, stock and the games they actually plan to play before choosing a system.
