How That’s No Moon’s Debut Title Aims To Redefine The Cover Shooter

The Crossfire game is a single-player, story-driven take on the multiplayer shooter franchise from South Korean developer Smilegate. Revealed during Summer Game Fest 2026, the project is the debut title from That’s No Moon, a studio founded by industry veterans in 2021. Rather than focusing on constant, head-on firefights, it puts tactical stealth and a new approach to cover at the center of its gameplay.

What the Crossfire Game Is About

The story follows two soldiers with sharply different outlooks: Layla Qassam and Delroy Cross. Claudia Doumit, known for her role as Victoria Neuman in The Boys, plays Layla, the only character controlled directly by the player. Ricky Whittle, who appeared in American Gods, plays Delroy, an AI-controlled companion who stays with her throughout the journey.

The pair disagree about how society should change. Layla favors progress, while Delroy seeks to preserve the status quo. Their relationship is not framed as a simple journey toward shared beliefs. Instead, the story explores whether they can respect each other’s positions without persuading one another to change sides. For players, that setup suggests a character-focused conflict alongside the combat, though the specific circumstances behind their opposing views have not been fully explained.

How Adaptive Cover Changes Combat

Although Crossfire may initially look like a conventional military shooter, its setting includes science-fiction technology. The characters use familiar weapons as well as advanced equipment; Delroy, for instance, can turn invisible by cloaking himself.

The central gameplay idea is Adaptive Cover. Built with Unreal Engine 5, the system is designed to let Layla use natural features such as rocks and boulders for protection, rather than relying on clearly marked crates or boxes. Players can take cover behind terrain or move around it in a more natural way. The usefulness of any object depends on its shape, the player’s position, and how effectively it blocks an enemy’s view.

That’s No Moon game director Jacob Minkoff said the team developed Adaptive Cover to give the environment more detail and realism while expanding the options available to level designers and artists. He described the grounded approach as a way to connect the game’s mechanics with its narrative and build the tension of a cinematic thriller.

A Focus on Stealth and Lethal Encounters

Adaptive Cover supports a slower, more deliberate style of play. Layla is vulnerable, and only a few hits can take her down. Charging into a group of enemies is therefore likely to be risky. Players will need to consider whether to slip past opponents, use terrain to stay concealed, or find a better position before attacking.

A practical approach is to assess the surroundings before engaging: identify possible hiding places, watch enemy positions, and plan a route that offers protection. Because cover is not limited to obvious objects, paying attention to the landscape may be as important as choosing a weapon.

Platforms and Release Information

Crossfire is planned for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. No release window has been announced. Until a launch date and further gameplay details are shared, the confirmed information points to a single-player sci-fi shooter built around stealth, a two-character story, and adaptable use of the environment.

For players interested in tactical encounters rather than nonstop run-and-gun action, the Crossfire game’s adaptive cover system is its most distinctive announced feature. Its success will depend on how effectively the terrain, stealth options, and narrative work together during play.
