Industry leaders honour Vince Zampella at DICE Summit

A Vince Zampella tribute at this week’s DICE Summit in Las Vegas brought game developers and executives together to remember the Respawn Entertainment co-founder and Call of Duty co-creator. Speakers reflected on his influence as a leader, his support for colleagues and the standards he championed in game development. Zampella died in a car crash in late December.

Vince Zampella tribute highlights his team-first leadership

Bethesda Game Studios director Todd Howard spoke about a friendship with Zampella that spanned two decades. Howard said he regularly sought his advice about making games and navigating changes across the industry, describing him as a trusted, straightforward voice.

The pair also served on the DICE Annual Awards board of directors. Howard shared that he had recently nominated Zampella for a Lifetime Achievement Award. Zampella declined, Howard recalled, because he was more interested in the team than in personal recognition.

Howard said Zampella’s contribution went beyond the games themselves. He praised his leadership, professional relationships and ability to recognise and develop talent, as well as his role in shaping the industry. For teams reflecting on that example, the practical takeaway is to recognise contributions across a project—not only the work of its most visible individuals.

Colleagues remember an independent voice

Geoff Keighley and EA Entertainment president Laura Miele also shared tributes. Miele connected Zampella’s legacy to studios that put trust, craftsmanship and people ahead of fear, shortcuts and ego. Her comments highlighted how leadership values can influence a studio’s working culture as well as the games it makes.

Keighley remembered Zampella as direct, loyal to the people doing the work and impatient with unnecessary complications. He also described him as someone who could challenge established organisations to take risks and keep players at the centre of decisions. The remarks offered a picture of a leader who remained independent while working within large companies.

Messages from game development peers

Pre-recorded messages came from Gearbox founder Randy Pitchford, Insomniac Games’ Ted Price, Hideo Kojima and Respawn general manager Daniel Suarez. Suarez recalled that Zampella consistently pushed for a game to reach its full potential. His message underscored the importance of having someone on a team who advocates for quality throughout development.

Kojima said Zampella gave him support and advice while he was establishing Kojima Productions. He also recalled visiting Zampella’s studio and adopting some of its useful ideas. Kojima concluded that the games industry would not be what it is today without Zampella’s influence.

Why the DICE Summit tribute matters

The tributes brought together several parts of Zampella’s legacy: games, mentorship, creative standards and the people he supported. For readers following the industry, the reflections offer more than a list of career achievements; they show how colleagues understood his impact on teams and studio culture.

This Vince Zampella tribute at the DICE Summit remembered a figure whose peers associated his work with player-focused decisions, strong teams and a willingness to challenge convention. Their comments made clear that his influence was felt not only in the games he helped create, but also in the developers and leaders he encouraged.
