Jack Emmert returns to Cryptic Studios as CEO

Jack Emmert returns to Cryptic Studios as CEO after the studio’s separation from Embracer Group. The MMO developer has resumed responsibility for its games, including Star Trek Online, Neverwinter and Champions Online. Emmert says his goal is to help the company build a lasting future rather than wind down its operations.

Jack Emmert returns to Cryptic Studios as CEO

Emmert has said he wants Cryptic to remain active and continue developing its identity through both its existing live games and possible new projects. He described the studio’s history as having included difficult periods, but said he is joining the team with the aim of building something new together.

For players, the key confirmed change is that Cryptic has taken back responsibility for its titles. Emmert has not outlined specific updates or release plans in the statements provided, so players should look to official game announcements for confirmed details rather than assume immediate changes.

Emmert’s history with Cryptic Studios

Emmert co-founded Cryptic in 2000, which was his first job in the games industry. He held several leadership roles, including chief creative officer and chief operating officer, before becoming CEO in 2011 after John Needham left the position.

Also in 2011, Perfect World acquired Cryptic for $50 million after Atari divested the studio. Emmert left Cryptic in 2016 to take a CEO role at Daybreak’s Austin studio.

In 2022, he became CEO of Jackalope Games, NetEase’s first US studio, based in Austin. The company was later renamed Jackalyptic Games. Emmert announced in November that NetEase had closed the studio.

Why Emmert says his leadership has changed

Emmert reflected on how his experience at other companies broadened his approach to leadership. After founding Cryptic, he says he became strongly attached to his own methods. Working in different environments later helped him become more open to collaboration and alternative ways of working.

He now sees the CEO’s role as representing the team and its players, rather than simply issuing instructions. Emmert said he is interested in how that approach will shape his return to Cryptic. He also hopes to bring back additional former employees, while noting that the current team includes both familiar staff and new colleagues.

Cryptic’s ownership and game responsibilities

Embracer Group acquired Perfect World Entertainment’s North American operations and publishing business in 2021, a deal that included Cryptic. Following restructuring, Cryptic experienced layoffs in 2023 and 2024 and later operated under mobile developer Deca Games.

In November, Embracer divested Cryptic alongside Arc Games. Cryptic then reassumed responsibility for Star Trek Online, Neverwinter and Champions Online. Emmert said Deca team members who had worked on the titles are now part of Cryptic, alongside veterans who continued supporting the games.

For players following the transition, the practical point is that the titles are once again under Cryptic’s responsibility, with staff from both teams contributing. Any decisions about future content, support or new games will need to be confirmed by the studio.

What Jack Emmert’s return means for Cryptic

Jack Emmert returns to Cryptic Studios at a significant point in the company’s history: the studio has regained responsibility for its games, and its co-founder is back as CEO. His stated priorities are to strengthen the team, support the existing titles and explore a future identity for Cryptic. Specific plans have not been announced, so players should treat future projects and game changes as unconfirmed until the studio shares further information.
