Why Microsoft says Xbox prices are rising
Microsoft attributed the increases to higher costs for console storage and memory. The company said these component prices had risen by more than 2.5 times and expected them to double again by fall 2027. It also said the wider consumer electronics industry was dealing with component shortages, with consoles especially affected.
According to Microsoft, consoles are often sold for less than their manufacturing cost rather than at a profit. The company also discontinued the 2TB model.
Changes across the Xbox business
In the weeks after the June price announcement, Xbox underwent a major restructuring. The changes included layoffs affecting 3,200 employees and the divestment of five studios.
Microsoft also reported that Xbox revenue declined by $1.7 billion in 2026. Hardware sales fell 29% year on year, which the company attributed to lower console sales.
Xbox CEO Asha Sharma said the business would learn from its past and focus on creating experiences players will value over the long term. Sharma also noted that Xbox gained over 200 new players in FY26, but said the business had not grown alongside its audience. The company expects to return to growth by the end of 2027.
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said Xbox leadership was making decisions across its content portfolio, platform and operations to reset the business for long-term growth. He pointed to the company’s franchises and studios as strengths it hopes to bring together.
What the Xbox price increases mean for buyers
The Xbox price increases in UK and Europe make it important to compare the full cost of each model, rather than choosing by console name alone. Consider whether you need more storage or a disc drive, and check local retailer pricing before deciding. Microsoft has linked the changes to component costs, while also outlining broader efforts to return the Xbox business to growth.
