Atmospheric Studio is a new independent entertainment company founded by Patrick O’Luanaigh, the former CEO and founder of VR developer nDreams. The studio plans to create original intellectual property spanning games and music, with its first project exploring how sound can shape both gameplay and players’ emotional responses.

What Atmospheric Studio is creating
The company’s creative approach brings narrative, interaction and audio together from the start of development. Rather than treating music as an addition to a finished game, Atmospheric aims to make sound an integral part of the experience and the worlds it builds.
O’Luanaigh has clarified that the project is not simply a traditional music game in the style of Guitar Hero, Beat Saber or PaRappa the Rapper. He has pointed to the film Baby Driver as a closer reference for the way music can influence action and feeling. The studio is interested in how audio can heighten tension and affect the way players experience a story.
For players, this could mean paying attention to how sound and narrative work together, rather than expecting a game focused mainly on performing songs. The project is still in development, so specific gameplay details and a release date have not been announced.
Patrick O’Luanaigh’s independent game plans
O’Luanaigh left nDreams in May 2025 after 19 years as its CEO. His departure came 18 months after the studio was acquired by Aonic. Before establishing nDreams, he held senior positions at SCi, Eidos and Codemasters.
He has described a longstanding interest in story-rich games, memorable characters and audio production. Alongside his work in games, O’Luanaigh has experience as a composer and audio engineer. Atmospheric gives him the opportunity to return to hands-on creative development, with a focus on a smaller, independent production.
His previous leadership experience spans both small teams and larger projects. He has said that the close-knit, experimental period of nDreams’ early years was especially rewarding, and that keeping the new studio’s development process enjoyable is a priority.
A small, self-funded team
Atmospheric is currently self-funded and has no investment. O’Luanaigh is the company’s only employee, working with freelance contributors on areas including art, writing and some coding. He does not expect to hire permanent staff before the first game is signed.
The studio intends to seek a publishing partner at the right stage, potentially at the start of the following year, to help finance the full game. For an independent project, a publisher can provide development funding and support, but the studio has not announced a partner or a launch schedule.

What to expect from Atmospheric Studio
Atmospheric Studio’s first game is being shaped around the connection between music, story and play. Its plans are still at an early stage, and details such as the title, platforms and release date remain unconfirmed. For now, the clearest indication of the studio’s direction is its aim to make audio an active part of an immersive, narrative-led game rather than a separate feature.
