New Amenities, But Not Renovations

The Animal Crossing: New Horizons 3.0 update brings new ways to decorate, play with friends, and welcome visitors to your island. Alongside free content for all players, a separate Switch 2 upgrade adds hardware-specific features. A hands-off demo offered a closer look at what’s coming, including Slumber Islands, a hotel, and crossover décor.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons 3.0 update features

The Switch 2 upgrade connects several new console features to in-game activities. Mouse controls let players arrange furniture in their homes, create custom designs, and draw on the town bulletin board. These options could make detailed decorating and design work easier to manage.

The megaphone uses the Switch 2 microphone to call a villager and bring them closer. It only works outdoors when the villager is within earshot, and the item occupies an inventory slot. That makes it a playful addition, though its restrictions may limit how often players find it useful.

Slumber Islands add room for creative designs

Slumber Islands are a major part of the free update. Players can create, terraform, and decorate these dream locations with friends, without having to redesign their main island to try out a new idea. The demo showed large, medium, and small island sizes, giving players options for different kinds of layouts.

Players can furnish a Slumber Island with items they have acquired in the waking game, along with trees and other outdoor plants. Villagers can also appear there: a Residents menu lets players bring characters from their island into the dream setting. Visitors may be able to bring their own residents, too.

Keep in mind that each Slumber Island is tied to one player’s account. The owner needs to be present for others to access it, and leaving the island ends the session for everyone. It supports shared decorating, but it does not work like a persistent server that friends can visit whenever they want.

Design hotel rooms and earn tickets

The update also introduces a hotel connected to Kapp’n’s pier, wherever the pier is located on the island. After unlocking the hotel, players can design guest rooms around preset themes. The demo featured a Dreamy room with pastel colors, snacks, and a large stuffed teddy bear. Custom themes are also available, giving players room to develop their own look.

Room design earns tickets that can be exchanged for special furniture in the hotel lobby. Players can also earn tickets by selling Kapp’n a rotating selection of craftable items. Clothing displayed on lobby mannequins may be worn by visiting villagers as they explore the island.

Crossover items and multiplayer on Switch 2

New crossover décor includes items themed around Splatoon, The Legend of Zelda, and Lego. Amiibo from the relevant game series can unlock the Splatoon and Zelda collections. The demo indicated that one compatible amiibo from a series unlocks its full set rather than only the item associated with that specific figure. Scans are limited by day.

On Switch 2, GameChat is supported, and up to 12 people can visit an island. The demo showed a roughly 30-second loading screen when a second player joined. All visitors need to be using the Switch 2 version, so the larger group size may be most useful for players who already have a compatible group ready to play.

Release details and overall impression

The free update is scheduled for January 15, while the Switch 2 upgrade costs $4.99. The additions offer returning players more activities and creative space, particularly through Slumber Islands and hotel room design. They are substantial new options, but the demo did not suggest major renovations to the core game experience. For players curious about the Animal Crossing: New Horizons 3.0 update, the free content adds new ways to play without requiring a Switch 2.
