Nintendo clarifies hardware price rises were due to sustained component and market costs

Nintendo says its hardware price increases reflect a sustained rise in component and wider market costs, rather than a short-term fluctuation. President Shuntaro Furukawa explained that keeping existing prices could have significantly reduced hardware profitability, potentially putting pressure on the company’s wider business operations.

Nintendo hardware price increases reflect ongoing costs

Speaking during a question-and-answer session after Nintendo’s financial results, Furukawa said the company would have considered other approaches if higher costs appeared likely to ease soon. Those options could have included improving productivity and growing the hardware install base without changing prices.

Instead, Nintendo expects several cost pressures to persist over the medium to long term. Furukawa pointed to higher prices for memory and other components, as well as movements in foreign exchange markets and oil prices. The company chose to pass on a portion of these costs through selling prices, with the stated aim of maintaining a healthy earnings structure.

Component prices and exchange rates can change, so Nintendo acknowledged that uncertainty remains. Furukawa said the company is preparing to respond flexibly as conditions develop. For customers, this means the announcement does not establish what prices will be in every market or how they may change later; buyers should check current local pricing before making a purchase.

Switch 2 sales exceed Nintendo’s earlier forecasts

Nintendo reported 19.86 million Switch 2 unit sales after the system’s launch last year. That total was above both the company’s original forecast of 15 million and its revised forecast of 19 million. Furukawa described the launch performance as exceptionally strong compared with previous Nintendo hardware launches.

He attributed the result to several factors working together. Many players were still enjoying the original Switch, while Switch 2’s ability to play Switch software helped make moving to the newer system easier. For owners considering an upgrade, backward compatibility means their existing Switch game library can be part of the decision.

Nintendo also identified the Switch 2 edition of Animal Crossing, alongside its free update, and Pokémon Pokopia as important contributors to hardware sales during the latter half of the fiscal year. Furukawa said the performance of Pokémon Pokopia reinforced Nintendo’s view that appealing software is a key factor in encouraging players to adopt the system.

What Nintendo expects for Switch 2 sales

For the next fiscal year, Nintendo forecasts sales of 16.5 million Switch 2 units. Furukawa said the estimate reflects the system’s current sales momentum and how Nintendo’s previous dedicated video game systems performed in their second year. The forecast is a projection, not a confirmed sales result.

Although Nintendo described Switch 2 adoption as extremely fast, even compared with the original Switch, Furukawa said the company does not currently see a particular concern about sales momentum. Nintendo plans to introduce more games for the system and communicate the appeal of each title, while allowing players to move to Switch 2 at their own pace.

Why software remains central to Nintendo’s strategy

Nintendo’s stated approach is to expand the Switch 2 install base and then support further software sales and engagement from players. The company sees a strong selection of games as an important reason for people to make the transition. This also helps explain why hardware pricing and game releases are discussed together: console sales build the audience, while software helps sustain interest in the platform.

Overall, Nintendo hardware price increases are tied to costs the company expects to remain elevated, while Switch 2’s early sales have surpassed its forecasts. Customers weighing a purchase can compare current local prices and consider whether the system’s compatibility and available games meet their needs.
