Nintendo Switch 2 sales in Japan reached 3.78 million units in 2025, making the console the country’s top-selling home system for the year. The total accounted for more than half of home consoles sold in Japan, while sales of physical games and the broader domestic games market also recorded strong results.

Nintendo Switch 2 sales in Japan 2025: Console rankings

The Switch 2 was the fastest-selling console in Japan’s history, according to the reported annual figures. It approached one million units during its first week on sale, setting a new record for a console launch in the country.

The original Nintendo Switch ranked second in 2025, with 1.52 million units sold. The remaining console sales were:

  • PlayStation 5: 879,204 units
  • Xbox Series X|S: 31,226 units
  • PlayStation 4: 1,807 units

PlayStation 5 sales fell 60% compared with the previous year, even with the release of a lower-priced version made specifically for Japan. For readers comparing yearly rankings, it is useful to distinguish unit sales from revenue: these figures show the number of consoles sold, not their total sales value.

Switch 2 launch and global performance

The console’s early performance in Japan reflected a broader strong start. In its first four months on the market, Switch 2 sales exceeded 10.36 million units worldwide, the highest global launch-period total reported for a Nintendo platform.

Launch-period totals and full-year sales cover different time frames, so they should not be compared as if they represent the same measurement. The Japanese figure of 3.78 million refers to sales during 2025, while the global total covers the console’s first four months after launch.

Top-selling physical games in Japan

Nintendo titles occupied nine of the top ten positions in the country’s physical game chart for the 21st consecutive year. Mario Kart World led the list with 2.66 million units sold.

Pokémon Legends Z-A recorded a combined 2.5 million units across Nintendo Switch and Switch 2. Capcom’s Monster Hunter Wild was the only non-Nintendo game in the top five, selling 838,319 units on PlayStation 5. Super Mario Party Jamboree on Switch followed with 498,397 units.

Donkey Kong Bananza, the Switch 2’s second console exclusive, ranked sixth with 435,206 units sold. These figures are for physical copies, so they do not represent total sales across both physical and digital formats.

Japan’s games market grew in 2025

Japan’s domestic games market increased by 38.8%, rising from ¥301.32 billion ($1.9 billion) in 2024 to ¥418.13 billion ($2.64 billion) in 2025. Hardware accounted for most of that growth: sales value climbed 49.3%, from ¥189.4 billion ($1.19 billion) to ¥282.69 billion ($1.74 billion).

Nintendo’s latest financial results also showed higher sales and operating profits. Sales rose 110% to ¥1.1 trillion ($6.9 billion), while operating profit increased 19.5% to ¥145.1 billion ($916 million).

What the figures show

Nintendo Switch 2 sales in Japan 2025 placed the system well ahead of other home consoles, while its launch-period performance added to the scale of its debut. The rankings also show that Nintendo games remained prominent in physical sales and that hardware was the main contributor to growth in Japan’s games market. When using these figures for comparisons, check whether the data covers a calendar year, a launch period, physical games only or both sales formats.
