Original Switch console lineup to be discontinued in Europe by mid-February 2027

Original Nintendo Switch models are set to leave sale in Europe from mid-February 2027, following new European Union requirements for consumer device batteries. The change covers the Switch, Switch Lite and Switch OLED, as well as several accessories. Nintendo says the consoles will continue to be manufactured through 2026 and should remain widely available in Europe until the sales transition.

Why original Nintendo Switch models are being discontinued in Europe

The planned end of sales is linked to EU rules requiring manufacturers to make batteries accessible to consumers by 2027. Under the requirements described by Nintendo, batteries must be removable using standard or specialised tools, and manufacturers must provide clear instructions and safety information.

For shoppers, the key distinction is that the change concerns the current product lineup and its supply to European retailers and the Nintendo Store. Existing consoles are not stated to stop working when sales end. However, the availability of new units may vary by country as the deadline approaches.

Which Switch consoles and accessories are affected?

Nintendo plans to stop supplying the following original console models to retailers from mid-February 2027. Sales through the Nintendo Store are also expected to end at that time:

  • Nintendo Switch
  • Nintendo Switch Lite
  • Nintendo Switch OLED

The change also applies to accessories for the original Switch range, including the original Pro Controller, Pokémon Go Plus +, NES controller, Sega Mega Drive Control Pad and SNES controller. If you are considering buying one of these products, check stock with local retailers rather than assuming that availability will be the same across Europe.

Switch 2 revisions and replacement accessories

Nintendo says revised Switch 2 consoles will begin rolling out this summer. Replacement Joy-Con 2 controllers and the Pro Controller are scheduled to become available this winter, while Nintendo 64 and Gamecube controllers are planned for early 2027.

Battery replacement kits are also expected to be sold through the Nintendo Store in Europe. Nintendo has indicated that revised products may arrive at different times in different European countries. It has also said that current and revised products will have no difference in functionality, so the revision is not described as an upgrade to the user experience.

What current Switch owners should know

Nintendo has not clarified how the revision will affect people who already own a Switch 2 or whether it will change their warranty status in the EU. Owners who need battery service or have warranty questions should check the terms and support information applicable in their country instead of assuming that the new rules automatically alter existing coverage.

For anyone planning a purchase, the practical takeaway is to compare availability and warranty details before buying, especially as the February 2027 date approaches. The original Nintendo Switch models are expected to remain available for a limited period, but supply may differ between countries and retailers.

What the European sales change means

The planned withdrawal of the original Nintendo Switch models from European sales is tied to battery-access requirements, not a stated change to the consoles’ current functionality. Nintendo expects the lineup to remain in production through 2026, while revised products and replacement accessories arrive on a staggered schedule. Buyers should follow regional availability updates as mid-February 2027 approaches.
