The Reforj PC release is planned to begin with a closed playtest in Q1 2027. 4J Studios shared the timeline at Game Republic New Horizons, while noting that access will initially be limited and more details about the PC platform arrangements are still to come.
Reforj PC release: what players can expect
Reforj is an open-world survival sandbox, and its first PC testing phase is expected to start during the first quarter of 2027. The playtest will be invite-only at the outset. 4J Studios says this approach is intended to support a stable player experience as development continues.
The studio has not yet confirmed where the PC test will be hosted. It plans to share platform information later in the year alongside a fuller announcement. Players interested in participating should therefore look for official updates rather than assume that a particular PC storefront or sign-up process has been confirmed.
How player feedback is shaping development
At the event, 4J Studios representatives Chris van der Kuyl and Joseph “Stampy” Garrett discussed how community testing fits into the development process. Garrett explained that the game was first shown at a very early stage, around nine months after development began. At that point, players could generate a world and build in creative mode, but survival systems and threats had not yet been added.
A small group of community members began testing shortly after the initial announcement. The studio says it reviews player feedback every week, with suggestions reaching CEO and director Paddy Burns and lead designer Tom Fyfe directly. Some feedback has led to changes being added to the game as soon as the following week.
For testers, this means the experience may change frequently. Feedback is most useful when it clearly describes what happened, how it can be repeated, and what platform or conditions were involved.
Xbox testing and the move to PC
Reforj is currently available to early testers on Xbox Series X|S through the Xbox Insider Program. 4J Studios said testing on a consistent hardware specification helped the team assess early builds without the same range of PC compatibility variables.
The studio also described the Xbox phase as a way to gather feedback from its community before opening the game to a wider PC audience. PC testing can involve more combinations of hardware and configurations, so the developer wants the game to be ready for broader exposure before that phase begins.
Rixels and the Elements Engine
Alongside Reforj’s development, 4J Studios has introduced Rixels, a technology designed to provide textures while using a fraction of the memory. Rixels are integrated into the studio’s proprietary Elements Engine.
Creative director Brian Gomez has explained that 4J developed Elements Engine to build its own sandbox games after working on console and handheld versions of Minecraft. Rixels and the engine are part of the studio’s technical approach to creating Reforj.
What is confirmed about the Reforj PC release?
- Timing: The closed PC playtest is planned to start in Q1 2027.
- Access: Invitations will be limited initially.
- Platform details: The PC platform has not yet been announced.
- Current testing: Early testers can play through the Xbox Insider Program on Xbox Series X|S.
The Reforj PC release will begin with a controlled test rather than immediate open access. Until 4J Studios confirms the hosting platform and participation details, the most practical step for interested players is to follow official announcements and keep in mind that the build and features may continue to evolve through testing.
