Exergames for depression are attracting research interest because they combine physical activity with interactive gameplay. A study of adults with subthreshold depression found that participants who played Ring Fit Adventure reported improvements in depressive symptoms, anxiety, and sleep quality. The findings are promising, but they do not establish that exercise games can replace professional mental health care.

What the study found about exergames for depression
Funded by the Jilin Association of Higher Education, the study examined whether a Nintendo Switch-based exercise game could support adults experiencing subthreshold depression. This term describes depressive symptoms that do not meet the criteria for major depressive disorder. It is not the same as a formal diagnosis, and a qualified health professional can assess symptoms and recommend appropriate care.
The study included 84 adults, randomly assigned to one of two groups. Forty-two participants played Ring Fit Adventure two to three times per week, with each session lasting 50 to 60 minutes. The other 42 continued their usual activities. Researchers reported that the gaming group had greater reductions in depressive symptoms at the assessment points, alongside improvements in anxiety and sleep quality.
What the results may mean in everyday life
Exercise games may make movement more engaging for some people, and they can be played at home with compatible equipment. A structured game session may also help a person build a regular activity routine. If trying an exergame, choose a pace that feels manageable, take breaks, and follow the game’s safety guidance, particularly when a workout includes repeated movement or balance challenges.
However, this study was relatively small, and its results should be interpreted cautiously. The findings describe outcomes in a specific group of adults and do not show that every player will experience the same benefits. The study also does not establish that Ring Fit Adventure treats major depressive disorder or that gaming alone is sufficient mental health support.
When to seek professional support
Persistent low mood, loss of interest, or changes in sleep can have many causes. Anyone concerned about these symptoms should consider speaking with a doctor or mental health professional rather than relying on a game as treatment. An exergame may be one enjoyable way to add physical activity, but it should not delay an assessment or care recommended by a professional.
Video games and other health research
Games have also been studied for purposes beyond exercise. In 2020, the US Food and Drug Administration approved Akili Interactive’s EndeavorRx for prescription use in managing inattentive or combined-type ADHD. The FDA said the game had been shown to improve attention. That approval concerns a specific game and condition; it is not evidence that exercise games are approved treatments for depression.
Bottom line on exergames for depression
This 84-person study suggests that regular sessions with Ring Fit Adventure may be associated with improvements in depressive symptoms, anxiety, and sleep among adults with subthreshold depression. Exergames for depression could be an accessible activity for some people, but the evidence is preliminary. They are best viewed as a possible supplement to healthy routines, not a substitute for professional assessment or treatment.
