Resurrection of the Insomnia Gaming Festival cancelled due to lack of industry support

The Insomnia Gaming Festival will not return in 2026 after organisers cancelled its planned comeback, citing a shortfall in sponsorship and exhibitor support. Organisers said all ticket-holders would receive refunds. The decision means the UK event, which combines gaming, esports and live entertainment, will not go ahead as scheduled.

Why was the Insomnia Gaming Festival cancelled?

Organisers said consumer ticket sales showed interest in the festival’s return, and they had also received notable interest from the education sector. However, major technology and hardware companies were investing less in live events, leaving the event without the sponsorship and exhibitor participation needed to deliver a festival of its intended scale.

For visitors, that distinction matters: ticket demand alone could not make up for the missing commercial support. Insomnia’s format relies on more than entry sales, with exhibitors, tournament activity and stage programming contributing to the overall experience.

What was planned for i74?

The 2026 event, named i74, was intended to revive the Insomnia brand after its previous organiser, Player1 Events, went into liquidation in 2024. A consortium behind the new event included companies that had supported earlier Insomnia festivals: indie publisher Modern Wolf, Emblem Events & Exhibitions, High Viz Media (Group) Ltd, and Protec European Events.

i74 had been scheduled for 30 April to 3 May 2026 at the Staffordshire County Showground. This would have moved the festival away from its long-established venue at the Birmingham NEC.

Insomnia’s history and the UK gaming event scene

Insomnia began as a LAN event, where attendees brought computers together to play games in person. Over time, it expanded to include a public exhibition floor, stage content and esports tournaments. Its return was significant to long-time visitors, competitors and families who had made the festival part of their annual plans.

The cancellation comes amid wider changes to UK gaming events. EGX stopped operating as a standalone consumer gaming show in 2024 and became part of MCM London Comic Con. Another new event, To The Moon Expo, also struggled at its launch the previous November. These developments point to the financial challenges of staging large public events, although each event has its own circumstances.

Refunds and whether the festival will return

Organisers said ticket-holders would receive refunds. Attendees should check the email address used for their booking and keep their order confirmation until the refund has been processed. If a refund does not arrive within the timeframe provided by the organisers or ticket seller, the original booking details can help when contacting customer support.

Insomnia Head of Operations Michael Virks said the decision followed months of work and was especially difficult for a team with personal connections to the festival. He explained that proceeding without the expected exhibitors, spectacle and production quality would not meet the standard the community associated with Insomnia.

Organisers said the event would pause, with no current plan for another edition. They expressed hope that improved sponsorship conditions, renewed technology-sector investment in live events and greater economic stability could make a future festival possible. For now, the Insomnia Gaming Festival has no confirmed return date.
