Roblox launches new age-based accounts and expanded parental controls “to build age-appropriate experiences for all”

Roblox age-based accounts are intended to make the platform’s content, communication options, and safety settings more appropriate for younger users. The company has announced two account types for minors, alongside expanded parental controls that give families more ways to manage games, chat, screen time, and spending.

Roblox age-based accounts: what families should know

The two new account types are Roblox Kids for children aged five to eight and Roblox Select for users aged nine to 15. Roblox says the accounts are scheduled to launch in June. The changes bring age checks, default account settings, content ratings, moderation, and parental controls into a more unified system for younger users.

The company says the new framework is designed to preserve access to the vast majority of users’ favorite games while applying settings suited to each age group. Families should review the account’s content and communication options when the changes arrive, since the available settings may differ according to a child’s age.

How Roblox will select games for users under 16

Roblox says it will use an ongoing selection process to determine which games are available to users under 16. The process will include developer verification, expanded content evaluation and ratings, and additional limits for material considered more suitable for older audiences.

The company also says uploaded content will continue to go through its existing moderation systems. These include automated asset scanning, review of user reports, and moderation that assesses scenes in real time for potential policy violations. The extra selection process is intended to work alongside those existing measures.

For parents, content ratings can help narrow down suitable games, but they are only one part of deciding what a child should play. Reviewing a game together and discussing communication with other players can provide useful context as well.

New parental controls for games, chat, and screen time

The expanded controls are designed to give parents more visibility into their child’s activity and more direct ways to set limits. Roblox says parents will be able to manage content ratings, communication settings, screen time, and spending limits. They will also be able to see which games their children play and who they play with.

  • Block individual games: Parents will be able to block specific games for children through age 15.
  • Manage direct chat: Parents will be able to adjust direct chat settings through age 15.
  • Approve individual games: Parents can approve access to specific games that are not included in the child’s default account type.

These options may be useful for families who want to make decisions game by game rather than relying only on general account settings. Parents can also revisit limits as a child’s interests and needs change.

What happens to existing Roblox accounts?

According to Roblox, age-checked users aged 16 and older will not see a change to their experience. Minor accounts are expected to transition to the appropriate account type when users reach the relevant ages. Users who have not completed an age check will be moved into an age-based account Roblox considers appropriate.

The announcement follows legal and regulatory scrutiny of Roblox over child safety. Roblox has disputed allegations raised in a lawsuit filed by officials in Los Angeles. The Australian government has also sought a response from the company regarding concerns about the exploitation of children on the service.

Roblox has separately announced plans for a monthly subscription service called Roblox Plus. For families, the main practical step is to check the available account settings and parental controls when the age-based accounts roll out. Overall, Roblox age-based accounts aim to match access and safety settings more closely to a user’s age while giving parents additional ways to oversee play.
